I think the game is turning.

Russia now claims that Ukraine will invade the Donbass region, putting a counterpoint to the "imminent" Russian invasion that has yet to take place.

The Russians, to really emphasize that this invasion is a fact, ordered the civilians from Donbass to retreat leaving the fighting men to settle in Donbass and offer resistance to the Ukrainian army.

The problem is that no one knows what really happened. Who started attacking each other. There are advertisements from both sides.

The US seeing that its propaganda of Russia's invasion of Ukraine was being covered up by the news of Ukraine's alleged invasion of Donbass decided to double the ante and emphasized increasing the number of troops to over 190,000 Russians on the Ukrainian border.

Just out of curiosity, in which region(s) of Ukraine does, or do, the major Russian gas line(s) pass?

The war will happen. The question is when will it happen

Seeing the recent escalatory rhetoric/actions, anything between now and February 22 would be a good bet
A total this point, seeing that it is likely, now, somehow, the exact timing of it is of little interest. Thinking of the destruction and the disruption, and loss, of life, and the human-suffering that is to come is saddening.

Ukraine and its people are just pawns. The game is played on an entirely different level.

When we say:
"When elephants fight, it’s the grass that suffers", Ukraine is the grass.

If you look into Libyan history, you’ll find that this was the reason that Quadaffi bout all those (ultimately useless) weapons to bolster his country’s defenses. His early memories were filled with accounts of the “elephants” fighting their Great War and his people and their country being the grass!
