some top-notch Su-34 (one machine) was used to set off Georgian, USSR-designed, SAMs (and quickly and safely return right after) ... (I don't mean the source which Su-34 wiki article quotes:

) ... my point is now it could work the other way, some high-tech Russian SAM shooting at USSR-designed planes ... but I expect some people here to tell us there aren't any Russian SAMs in Donbass :)

I totally forgot about their SAM. Still I didn't know that Ukraine air force is in such a bad state. I thought their ground troops will get some air support when they engage separatist ground troops

The people in the Donbass had much less when the assault by Kiev began. They had mostly light weapons some of them as old as the end of the 19th century. The main problem for Kiev is that the regime has extremely low support among the conscripts and the population as a whole. This is well illustrated by the very low number of voters in the recent elections in most of the country. So Kiev started to loose the civil war as soon as the assault began when it took ground very slowly and lost much of its heavy weapons which were then to a large extent repaired in the industrial plant in the East and used against it. The East did depend to a considerable extent on Russian supply of ammunition for their weapons.
Of course Kiev is broke and that too is a large problem.

you must realized though that at that particular stage Kiev's ATO also deployed only a fraction of the forces as they did later in july and august. this was primarily because they did not expect to meet too much resistance, but also due to the unfavourable disposition and poor readiness level of the UKR units.

What would be the target of such a barrage? I don't think the Novorussians presented a target large and important enough so the video is just a, probably futile, effort to intimidate the enenmy.

Kiev probably expected its forces to be better led than the opposition because they had been deployed to Afghanistan and so had received training from the US army. The result was the opposite.
