Overwhelming Ukrainian force . Basically, they use Soviet tactics from early parts of WW2 , heavy artillery strikes with massed attacks by armor and mechanized infantry . Most of the casualties happen when rebel artillery caches some of their columns in the open . In urban warfare they tend to barricade themselves into buildings . Rebels usually operate in smaller groups using hit and run tactics, often they do not posses enough strength to dislodge them . We must always keep in mind that rebel army is significantly smaller then UA .

this calls a question why Separatists went there? I mean on a tactical level (no need to conspire about G7 meeting LOL), was it a "combat recon" (разведка боем) going not as expected? first I said "bad" instead of "not as expected", but then I realized you seemed to be considering the June 3 Marinka fights the Separatists' victory ... or Pyrrhic victory of Ukrainians maybe?

and said they absolutely considered Crimea to belong to the Russian Federation etc.

Sounds more like Ukraine separatists really believe Crimea belongs to (East) Ukraine, but retracted the statement to appease Putin.
