Effectively this government has rung the dinner bell for anyone wanting to grab British overseas territories, because until the QEs and Lightning 'C are in service we will have no means of retaking them.

Hmm, but would an Invincible class with a few squadrons of harriers (limited air-to-air capabilities) really made a difference in the face of a determined enemy given the time they'd have to dig in?

As Neutral Zone said it's just the Falklands that are disputed to the point where a military action would be theoretically possible. I don't see how they could take the islands in the first place now.

After next year the Harriers are history. An ignominious end for one of the greatest British aircraft designs ever (at least in UK service). If Ark Royal is kept in extended readiness as Invincible is currently then I think it would take a few months to get it back in service, certainly ruling out the type of operation that happened in 1982.

Invincible is not in great shape right now; from what I understand is that they have stripped Invincible of many parts; reportedly much of the electronics are gone. It would take a lot of time and money to get Invincible to combat-ready status. The next step for Invincible in her current shape, is probably the scrap yard.

:eek:ff:eek:ff

Many decades ago British Television made a very good documentary on the causes and the conduct of WW1, spanning dozens of 1hour programmes. Ive been trying to locate a copy, but I cant remember what it was called.
Ive seen many wwi docos avaliable for download or for purchase, but , judging by the episodes/running time they are far too short to be the one im looking for.

Any Suggestions? thanks

The closest I can think of was the Granada Series "The World at War" made back in the 70's. This however was about WW2 but otherwise fits your description perfectly.

The last Daring class DDG has been launched. At least all of them are in the water now. With the current financial constraints, there won't be any more major surface combatants in a decade (besides the carriers). Six is a rather small number, esp. when other ships are being decomissioned, but at least they represent a sophisticated capability core. If all six T-45s are fully outfitted, of course. I hope they will be.

Final Destroyer launched on Clyde

11 October 2010 Last updated at 15:48 GMT

The sixth and last of the Royal Navy's new Type 45 Destroyers has been launched on the River Clyde in Glasgow.

The 7,500 tonne warship, HMS Duncan, slipped into the water from BAE's shipyard at Govan.
The vessel will provide air defence cover, be able to carry up to 60 Royal Marine Commandos and operate a variety of helicopters from its flight deck.
It will enter service in 2014. The completed Type 45s are Daring, Diamond, Dauntless, Dragon and Defender. ...

Well I guess the idea of sharing their aircraft carriers, with each nations jets deploying on the others carrier is like mixed crewing.
It will also be interesting if such a carrier is deployed to an area of conflicting interests.

I'm frankly astonished nobody has actually heard what they said, instead everyone is jumping to conclusions. When CdG is in refit, their air group will maintain currency by cross decking to one of our carriers. And vice versa. At the moment the French deploy their aircraft to a US Carrier to maintain their pilot's CarQuals. Cross decking is nothing new, it's been going on since WW2. Be in no doubt, this is not 'Sharing Carriers' as the press seem to think. Thecrew of the CdG will be 100% French and our flat tops will be crewed by 100% British sailors. Any talk of handing over a carrier for a couple of years is pure nonsense. And any talk of a French Carrier going to war on our behalf is likewise, nonsense, unless there is a specific French interest in the operation. As far as the French are concerned, this is another step on the way to a federal Euro Navy, part of the greater European project...;)

Finally, someone else who can read!

My only addition would be that a Euronavy would be a great idea as long as it was backed up by a binding treaty committing Europe to all European security concerns (Falklands, French pacific holdings etc).
