UK confirms Mk 41 VLS selection for Type 26 "GCS"
04 December 2014

UK Secretary of State for Defence Michael Fallon has confirmed the selection of the strike-length Mk 41 Vertical Launch System (VLS) to meet the Flexible Strike Silo requirement for the Royal Navy's next-generation Type 26 Global Combat Ship (GCS).nEach ship will be fitted with three eight-cell modules in a silo sited forward of the bridge.

Fallon confirmed the decision to install a 24-cell Flexible Strike Silo fitted with Mk 41 launchers in a written response to Rory Stewart MP, chairman of the House of Commons Defence Committee. His statement said the VLS infrastructure "will be able to accommodate a range of missiles from long-range strike weapons (such as the Tomahawk land attack missile) to anti-ship missiles and anti-submarine rockets with the weapon payload being reconfigured to meet changing threats and missions".

Thank God for that! Sylver isn't bad at all, but the Mk 41 is just so more flexible right now. Glad to see the best equipment is going to be used rather than buying European because "we're in Europe".

Those 24 will just be the strike length cells.

The Type 26 is also going to have 48 CAMM missile VLA cells in addition to these 24.

So, yes, I believe it will be enough.

It means they will have 24 very flexible VLS cells that they can load numerous different types of missiles into.

I see.

says (I have to retype it; the Sea-Ceptor anti-air missiles entry):
The provision of 48 Sea Ceptor missiles will provide the platform with considerable defensive armament, with a local area capability to protect consorts (unlike the Sea Wolf missile it replaces in the T23).

just hope it won't be that FFBNW thing ...

Royal Navy to establish a larger permanent base in Bahrain to berth more RN ships and potentially, the Queen Elizabeth class aircraft carriers. UK Defence Secretary Michael Fallon added: "This new base is a permanent expansion of the Royal Navy's footprint and will enable Britain to send more and larger ships to reinforce stability in the Gulf."

Bahrain's foreign minister Sheikh Khalid bin Ahmed bin Mohammed Al-Khalifa said: "Bahrain looks forward to the early implementation of today's arrangement and to continuing to work with the UK and other partners to address threats to regional security."

Thank you for the compliment, ami FORBIN! LOL

I'm going to retype the entry called the Flexible Strike Silo with Mk41 Launchers, too:
The Strike Silo will be fitted at build, which was not the case for the T45 Destroyer where the design instead accommodated the space weight and power requirements. The 24 cell Flexible Strike Silo will be able to accommodate a range of missiles from long range strike weapons (such as the Tomahawk Land Attack Missile) to Anti-Ship Missiles and Anti-Submarine Rockets with the weapon payload being reconfigured to meet changing threats and missions. When it has a Wildcat helicopter embarked, T26 GCS will be able to deploy both the heavy (Sea Venom) and light (Martlet) variants of the Future Anti-Surface Guided Weapon.

can somebody elaborate on the last sentence?
