General Dynamics UK has been awarded a contract by AgustaWestland to provide mission system equipment for UK AW101 Merlin Mk4/4a helicopters. This contract is part of the Merlin Life Sustainment Programme (MLSP), which was awarded to AgustaWestland by the UK Ministry of Defence in January 2014 to convert 25 AW101 Merlin helicopters for maritime operations.

The mission system equipment that will be delivered by General Dynamics UK includes a Tactical Processing System and Secure Data Recorder, which will provide increased performance and capability onboard the helicopters.

General Dynamics UK is a world-leading provider of Tactical Processing Systems, which integrates a diverse range of sensor and application information for display in the cockpit, encrypted data storage and tactical datalink capability. The company's Tactical Processing System is currently installed on the UK and export variants of the AgustaWestland AW159 Lynx Wildcat helicopter.

A UK test team including personnel from BAE Systems, has successfully completed initial aircraft handling trials for ASRAAM and Paveway IV weapons on the F-35B Lightning II aircraft at Patuxent River Naval Air Station in Maryland, United States. The UK’s Royal Air Force (RAF) already uses ASRAAM and Paveway IV on its existing combat air fleet. The successful tests are a step towards full interoperability between the current and future fast jets that will be used by the RAF and the UK’s Royal Navy from 2018.

Two F-35B STOVL aircraft, flown by Billie Flynn, Lockheed Martin’s F-35 test pilot and Squadron Leader Andy Edgell from the RAF, completed 9 flights with MBDA’s ASRAAM missiles and Raytheon’s Paveway IV laser guided bombs. The flights involved different configurations of both weapons types on the aircraft. The successful tests will be followed by the next stage of weapons testing due to take place in early 2015. These tests will involve weapon separation and then guided releases of both ASRAAM and Paveway IV from the aircraft.

The Merlin is a GREAT ASW helicopter. it is larger than the Seahawks and is probably one of the best large ASW platforms in existance.

The combination of Merlins and Type 23 FFGs (later to be Type 26 FFGs) are among the most deadly ASW operators out there.

MBDA ASRAAM and Raytheon Paveway IV weapons Tested on F-35B at US Navy Test Facility
And, as to the news regarding the testing of the missiles and bombs on the UK F-35Bs...this too is great news. The F-35 progam moves forward globally (the Netherlands just stood up their first F-35 Squadron) and some of the best and most respected militaries on the planet are moving right along with their plans to get these outstanding, 5th generation stealth strike aircraft into service as quickly as they can.

Agree with all of the above, but the Merlin article is referring to the Mk4/4a Merlins, these are the troop carrying versions, Navalised conversions of the 25 or so ex RAF Mk3/3a.

FIRST STORM SHADOW CRUISE MISSILE RELEASE FROM A EUROFIGHTER TYPHOON IS A SUCCESS
11/12/2014

Storm Shadow provides a significant leap in the Eurofighter Typhoon’s operational capabilities, enabling the platform to deploy multiple weapons at a very long range well clear of danger from air defences. Storm Shadow, already in service with the Italian Air Force and Royal Air Force Tornados, is a conventionally armed, stealthy, long-range stand-off precision weapon designed to neutralise high value targets. The new weapons system will add the capability to strike in day or night in all-weather conditions, well-defended infrastructure targets such as port facilities, control centres, bunkers, missile sites, airfields and bridges that would otherwise require several aircraft and missions. This is a new addition to the Eurofighter Typhoon’s potent simultaneous multi-/swing-role capabilities. Powered by a turbo-jet engine, with a range in excess of 560 km, the Storm Shadow missile weighs approximately 1.300kg and is just over 5 metres long. It will be available to operators when the Eurofighter Typhoon Phase 2 Enhancements become operational.

Eurofighter Typhoon is the most advanced new generation multi-role/swing-role combat aircraft currently available on the world market. Seven nations (United Kingdom, Germany, Italy, Spain, Austria, Saudi Arabia and Oman) have already ordered the Eurofighter Typhoon. Eurofighter Typhoon is currently the largest military procurement programme in Europe. Over 265,000 flying hours have already been accumulated and 421 aircraft delivered.

The high technology within the Programme strengthens the European aerospace industry in the international market and secures over 100,000 jobs in 400 companies. Eurofighter Jagdflugzeug GmbH manages the programme on behalf of the Eurofighter Partner Companies Alenia Aermacchi, BAE Systems and Airbus Defence and Space in Germany and Spain, which are the most important aviation and aerospace companies in Europe with a turnover of about 123.2 billion euro (2011).

The first tests on Storm Shadow integration for the Eurofighter began in December 2013 with development aircraft IPA2 operated by Alenia Aermacchi. Initially the Early Weapon Integration Flexibility tests featured a configuration of 2 Storm Shadow missiles, 2 AIM-9L Air-to-Air missiles, and 4 under fuselage Advanced Medium Range Air-to-Air Missiles (AMRAAM).

Six further flights were then completed in the following weeks to assess the Storm Shadow’s compatibility with the Eurofighter’s Air Data System and Flutter & Structural Coupling tests were also carried out. An additional later flight was then performed with baseline configuration (2 AIM-9L, 4 under fuselages AMRAAM and 1 Fuel Tank only) for comparative analyses purposes. The assessment of the Performance & Loads on the aircraft while carrying the missiles was done in March 2014 in a programme known as Extended WIF phase 1. Five flights were performed with the Storm Shadows installed and a further three with baseline configuration. The recent inert drop-tests and store release trials will now be followed by work on the instrumented missiles for the Environmental Data Gathering tests known as Phase 3. Additional work will include flights with the automatic pilot set for new aircraft configuration, and further flights for assessing handling qualities.

The UK Civil Aviation Authority’s unmanned air vehicle lead has expressed disappointment at the lack of UAV operators and developers that are coming forward to test larger systems in UK airspace.Speaking at the IQPC UAS Training and Simulation conference in London on 10 December, Gerry Corbett conveyed his dissatisfaction in the lack of progress, especially considering that the UK has test facilities to facilitate the integration of larger UAVs.

Corbett is an advocate of safe UAV integration in the UK, and stresses that the airspace is open as long as regulations are adhered to and that safety is at the forefront: “The airspace is ready but the unmanned technology isn’t,” he says. This includes developing technology that ensures a UAV can operate in the same way as a manned aircraft, and because of the relatively high proportion of uncontrolled airspace in the UK, sense and avoid systems are needed to prevent collisions with other aircraft using the space.
