Is that the barrel or is it some attachment to the side covering the barrel?

Re: Type 95 assault rifle

Mounting of a Rail system like that is something of a double edged sword, Like mounting a bayonet.
As although the carbine gains accessory's too increase it's mission capabilities it also increases stress on the barrel.
the barrel of a rifle is not a very happy life. Especially on a selective or automatic weapon constantly being heated and cooled as well as vibrated based on firing patterns is a death sentence for any metal. Now place on that the weight of a rail system, Laser sight and flashlight. although at first glance these may seem like nothing but when you are also being cooked and pounded it can lead too trouble.

If mounting rail system on the body not the barrel then it should be fine...QBZ95-1 already heading towards that direction (2 mounting points near the forward sight), though to do it like the rest of the world will take time for the PLA establishment to catch up, or perhaps when they R&D a successor to the QBZ95 series.

Re: Type 95 assault rifle

they are still fallowing the basic pattern established with other weapon systems. The Ar15 fallowed the same pattern with early retrofits mounting optics too the existing handle, then mounting of rail systems that stress the barrel the next step was the replaceable of these with a free floating rail system that placed the stress on the receiver ( a structure more suited too such), and now adaptive forearms that have the users place rails where they need and only where they need. the step after now would likely be hot rails, where in the rail system supply's power too the accessory.
I think the chinese will try too move the QBZ95 along the free floating path in the next few years. I am also wondering if they might try too R&D a SBR ( 7-12.5 inch barrel)

Re: Type 95 assault rifle

First the AK12 is just entering into manufacture AK12 as in Automat Kalashnikov 2012 is brand new. It's hard too tell what will happen now,
option one buyout where in another company comes in and takes over.
Option two the ever popular GM style bailout.
Option three close out.
as Izmash is still in close contact with the Russian government I think they will try and keep building well option one and two are still available.
Russia could try the buyout option and merge it into the Federal State Unitary Enterprise - Instument Design Bureau or the Bazalt. they could also come into the fangs of a non Russian Maker... (Colt Russia sends chills down my spine.) Of course this is not the First time a arms maker has gone bankrupt HK for example back in 1991 was sold too British Areospace after the German army killed the G11 and G41.
But has HK proved this time was not a nail in the coffin as Later That entity became BAE who then sold HK too investors who moved it back too Germany in 2002. but during there British time they cooked up the G36 and upgrades that would become the L85A2 and set the course for the modern HK as we know it.
