It would be odd that this is talking about 055, which is not exactly a new platform. The tone, and the fact that it is newsworthy at all, indicate that it's for a non-055 gas turbine ship. Is there any other such ship other than 076?
There's that new test platform stealth frigate but I would think that ship is too far along for this test to happen now if it was intended for that frigate.

052D/DGs? Although as part of a combined CODOG propulsion system.

Yes, but why would they need to test the exhaust and intake for a propulsion train that's been in use among successive classes since the early 2010s (given they were first used on the second batch 052Cs, or even the mid 2000s if one counts the 052B/C depending on how pne perceives the relevant components)

My bad, I didn't read the question carefully.

In that case, beyond 076 LHDs, my guessing would be the next-gen DDGs (i.e. 052D/055-successor) and/or 901-equivalent AOR?

With short EMALS, it is possible to launch the L15b navy version, equipped with dual WS-17 (thrust 4700kg).
There is one regiment in PLAAF equipped with L15 now.

Perhaps there is something innovative in the intake/exhaust system itself? Signature reduction, augmented intake, side exhaust...

Successful land based test of intake and exhaust systems for marine gas turbine, completed on 5th of Feb, 3 days ahead of schedule.
Everyone in that weibo thread seems to think it must be for 076, which if true would mean 076 replacing 055 as largest displacement PLAN ship powered by gas turbine.
This is a verification test of design on land mockup. It is to confirm the design (location and running of pipes, ventilation etc.). Only after this test would a ship's blueprint finalized. Whatever ship this test is related, we won't see it in drydock in a year.

I don't think we need any more evidence for 076 being powered by GT. The 2020 bidding document clearly mentioned 21MW GTs.

IF this is 076 test, it does answer the recent argument of what is being built in the drydock in Shanghai, and it is not 076.
