But, do they need it?

It's not exactly a heavy fighter. MTOM is less than a Super Hornet, FC-31 or F-35 (although the latter is notoriously heavy for what it achieves), similar to the KF-21 and slightly greater than the Typhoon or Rafale.

As for one vs two engines, a single engine big enough to power an aircraft of that class with sufficient reliability is a massive undertaking, there aren't a massive amount of modern military engines around that live up to those requirements. For the TF-X, the only modern off-the-shelf engine big enough would be the problematic F-35 engine.

The 60k lb is an old figure based on old size specs. Currently the weight is unknown but seeing it is 2m longer and has the same wing area as the F-22...

There's still a 10 ton difference between the F-22 and that old figure. The TF-X only has 65% of the dry power of the F-22. It is definitely a smaller aircraft. Based on engine power alone, you are looking at an aircraft that should have a MTOM of 24.700 kg to have the same performance as an F-22.

Who says it'll have or is designed to have the same performance as the F-22 with the F110?

Nobody does. But it will make for a pretty mediocre fighter jet by todays standards, assuming the weight grows any more. It wasn't spectacular at 27 tons to begin with. It isn't rocket science, almost any pilot or aircraft engineer would know that. IMO, either they managed to keep it close to or below 27 tons MTOM, or they are willing to make fairly big sacrifices to performance.

The first time you used 'MTOM' I thought you meant MTOW. Now I'm not sure what you mean by it.

That is relative. It won't be a 5th gen fighter until it has the indigenous or equivalent turbofan engine producing 35k lbf wet thrust and provides enough dry thrust to make it supercruise. Until then, it is regarded as a 4.5 gen fighter.

Also, these are the minimum requirements set by the TurAF. Bear in mind TUSAS is aiming for better performance:

I don't see how this is feasible for Turkey. It takes over a decade to develop a powerplant that capable, and that's for countries that have an established industry.

For Turkey? Hard to see how they can create an engine like that before 2040. Of course, I don't follow Turkey's defense industry like you do. Am I missing something?
