Russia's Kamov Company Deputy Chief Engineer Vinyamin Alekseyecic, the producer of the Israeli-Russian co-production Ka-50-2 helicopters competing in Turkey's attack helicopter tender, emphasized that the helicopters were named "Erdogan" in 1996 and that it has nothing to do with Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan. According to Alekseyevich's statements, after it became clear that Kamov company would participate in the helicopter tender opened by the Turkish Ministry of Defense in 1996, it was decided to give these helicopters a name of Turkish origin. The Russian side, who wanted this name to be related to the sky and birds, asked for advice from the Turkish side.
Explaining the difference between Ka 50-2 helicopters and Ka 50 and Ka 52 helicopters, Vinyamin Alekseyevich said, "Ka-50 helicopters are single-pilot helicopters. The Ka 52 helicopter is led by two pilots sitting side by side. Considering the wishes of the Turkish side, we placed the pilots' cabins one after the other, not side by side. We named it the Ka 50-2 as a model," he said.
