Xi plans not only to respond, but to take advantage of Trump’s moves. During Trump’s first term, Beijing scrambled to react. It is determined not to repeat that. Xi is well into his preparations and has signalled as much.
Most Chinese analysts were not surprised by Trump’s election, linking his comeback to a global tide of populism and nationalism. Beijing believes it now understands Trump’s gamesmanship and can manipulate his administration.
China’s confidence is based on the conclusion — accurate or not — that China in 2025 is different from 2017, and so is the US and the world. Many Chinese argue that Xi is stronger politically and the economy is more self-reliant and resilient, even amid recent challenges.
Chinese analysts view the US economy as more fragile and American politics as deeply divided. Geopolitically, Beijing sees US influence as declining throughout the global south and Asia — and support for China’s vision as rising.
Xi has already signalled that he will treat his ties to Trump as a purely business relationship, albeit Don Corleone style. He won’t personally embrace Trump and will retaliate early and hard in order to generate leverage. Beijing in effect rejected Trump’s invitation for Xi to attend the inauguration.
Xi is gunning for the US. Trade War 1 situation will never happen again

All Trump is doing is adding tariffs so any negotiations will be about removing those just added tariffs. Just like how they're saying Trump is going drop tariffs on China to around 50% from 245% or 145%. It's still 50%. What does China have to give to get that 50% tariff removed? Experts are saying the 10% on the rest for the world is extraordinary. Maybe the Chinese have to openly worship Trump like a God because he did China a favor by lowering it to 50%.

The fact is Trump and the Repanicans made a bad bet on false information that it was China that was in the weaker position. China called their bluff and they're running around with the heads cut-off because they have to save face somehow. Trump filled his administration with anti-China hawks because just like his tariffs, he thought China was going to be intimidated and bend the knee. That's why China ain't picking up the phone because all of them are antagonists to China. Trump certainly wasn't going to pick someone China respected because that would be a sign of weakness in negotiations to him.

Just like the deceitful distraction of thinking how kind Trump is for lowering his tariffs to 50%, let's also not forget Biden already ganged up allies against China before Trump minions said that was his plan and it failed. Who thinks Trump is going to do it better? Is Trump somehow going to charm the "Third World shitholes" of the global south to join with the US against China. All he'll have, maybe, are the countries Biden already got together against China and lost.

At the end of the day, the Chinese will come to the negotiating table with a list of demands. The price for going back to pre-tariff relations will be much, much higher than just zero tariffs from the U. S. I can see a long list of things the Chinese can ask for. EUV, C919 pass FAA, Huawei in the U. S., Chinese EV in the U.S., Taiwan, U. S. renounce taking Greenland. U. S. out of Burma. I could go on.
