It's actually insane how fast Trump is moving here, I think he's trying to overwhelm the public and system with so much shit that they don't notice half of the things that he does. Also, if this was China/Russia, this would be treated as a massive political purge, evidence of massive corruption, signs of being a failed state etc etc.

You've been reading too much liberal democratic political theory. As someone with a political science university background, if you have actually gotten to speak personally with those Professors who write these you would realize that they are just glorified journalists whose theories all contradict each other and contradict their own case study data. They love to construct models that suit their own political biases and then distort evidence to fit into their preconceived theories. I have seen it many times up close.
The so-called "strength" of democratic institutions is not some mysterious force of law or force of habit that prevents political actors from amassing too much power. History contains thousands of cases where all of the extremely strict and comprehensive laws and constitutions passed to restrict the concentration of power suddenly become totally ignored because the working class at a certain point of time strongly backs a leader who promises bread and circuses, or plays up some security threat. Even when these conventions have been in force for centuries they can be easily overturned if the working class chooses to. The only thing preventing the fall of democratic institutions is the prosperity of the middle class, which is the minimum criteria to maintain the appearance of liberal democracy: 1. Businesses are a lot less willing to operate under a government that kills or jails large numbers of people if the business is reliant on domestic consumption or high skilled employees (from the middle class). 2. It is a lot more difficult for one group to dominate the societal mainstream narrative if there are large numbers of educated, well-to-do citizens who contribute to different NGOs, religious groups, or movements, or have close connections with foreign societies 3. Political actors are less likely to find supporters for radical change or violent power grabs if there are fewer desperate working class people with nothing to lose. The moment any of these conditions are crossed out it is relatively easy to force through the constitutional order, even arrest the checks and balances or start a rebellion. A leader can pull some "national security" excuse and his supporters will back him all the way to a crown and throne.
