Trump says he wants the Education Department closed immediately

President Donald Trump said on Wednesday he wants the Education Department to be closed “immediately.”

“Oh, I’d like it to be closed immediately,” he told reporters in the Oval Office when asked when he wanted it closed.

“Look, the Department of Education is a big con job,” Trump said. “They rank the top 40 countries in the world, we’re ranked number 40th.”

Trump said last week he would like to close the department using an executive order but was quick to recognize he would need buy-ins from Congress and teachers’ unions to fulfill his campaign pledge to do so.

Trump did, however, sign two executive orders on school funding in January, including on school choice and ending funding for schools that support what the White House calls “radical indoctrination.”
“Look, the Department of Education is a big con job,” Trump said. “They rank the top 40 countries in the world, we’re ranked number 40th.”

That explains why DOGE is defunding academic tracking of the US education system. Trump doesn’t want to see the US officially being dead last.

LOL. A scene of 立皇帝 captured by cameras! This is surreal.
Look at me! I am just like you, a normal human being with normal people problems. I am not the richest man on earth thanks to all the incentives I get from your pockets to develop overpriced junk that most of you will never be able to afford. I can't afford daycare or a nanny. I am not a lizard *licks own eyes*.

While going back to plastic isn't the solution, I do agree with him on that paper straws are not working. And there are studies showing that many paper straws use toxic chemicals. Pushing for paper straws is premature at the best.
Straws need to hold liquid, be cheap and easy to transport.
Sustainable packaging needs to dissolve/breakdown, which water tends to do.

At this point they might as well mandate hollow pasta as straws, probably far more preferable for the consumer than paper that becomes mushy 30 second in.

Theres biodegradeable polymers like polylactic acid (PLA). But the name is a bit politically sensitive. No problem in China though.

PLA isn't really biodegradable though, requires specific compost facilities to process. You can see people's 3D printed junk last for years and years outside in the sun.

Plastic straws are also uniquely flexible, which makes storage and packaging a breeze when compared against alternative which are usually brittle.

Ultimately this fight over packaging is just green washing. There are far more environmentally damaging things that humans do (illegal crude refining in third world countries for example) than some straws.
