Trump administration drafting executive order to initiate Department of Education’s elimination

CNN — The Trump administration has begun drafting an executive order that would kick off the process of eliminating the Department of Education, the latest move by President Donald Trump to swiftly carry out his campaign promises, two sources familiar with the plans told CNN.

The move would come in two parts, the sources said. The order would direct the secretary of Education to create a plan to diminish the department through executive action.

Trump would also push for Congress to pass legislation to end the department, as those working on the order acknowledge that shuttering the department would require Congress’ involvement.

The president said Tuesday he wants his secretary of Education pick, Linda McMahon, to “put herself out of a job.”

“I told Linda, ‘Linda, I hope you do a great job in putting yourself out of a job.’ I want her to put herself out of a job – Education Department,” Trump said.

McMahon, who served as the head of the Small Business Administration during Trump’s first term, has yet to have a confirmation hearing for the top education post.

While calls to abolish the Education Department or merge it with another federal agency are not new, the move has historically failed to get support from Congress.

During Trump’s first term as president, his administration proposed merging the Education and Labor Departments into one federal agency. Even though Republicans controlled both the Senate and House of Representatives at the time, the proposal did not go anywhere.

This year, the Education Department is simultaneously being targeted by the Department of Government Efficiency, led by Elon Musk, as CNN previously reported.

Dozens of employees at the Education Department were placed on paid administrative leave Friday as part of the Trump administration’s larger effort to rid the federal workforceof employees associated with diversity, equity, inclusion and accessibility efforts.

On the campaign trail, Trump repeatedly pointed to the department as a sign of federal overreach and tied it to culture war issues. “We will drain the government education swamp and stop the abuse of your taxpayer dollars to indoctrinate America’s youth with all sorts of things that you don’t want to have our youth hearing,” he said.

On Tuesday, Trump, an advocate for policies that make it easier for families to spend taxpayer funds on private education, lamented US educational performance and cost.

“We spend more per pupil than any other country in the world, and we’re ranked at the bottom of the list,” Trump said, adding that he wants to “let the states run schools.”

But even if he succeeded in ending the department, it’s possible that some programs and funding could be retained and shifted to other agencies, which is where they were housed before the department was created in 1979.

Federal funding programs for K-12 schools that help support the education of students from low-income families and children with disabilities, for example, predated the creation of the Department of Education.

When presidents have proposed cuts to the department’s budget in the past, Congress has resisted and appropriated more funding than what the president asked for about 71% of the time, according to an analysis from the Brookings Institution. Even when the first Trump administration proposed cutting the department’s budget, the Republican-controlled Congress ultimately increased funding.
“I told Linda, ‘Linda, I hope you do a great job in putting yourself out of a job.’ I want her to put herself out of a job – Education Department,” Trump said

So both Trump and Elon wants the education department gone.

Anyone who thinks that the wars in the Middle East and Ukraine will suddenly stop just because of Trump's dumb US-political-style grifter election campaign rhetoric when the US has already sunk so much into those wars, both in terms of financial and other resources and its imperial image, while the MIC has only grown richer and more powerful thanks to those wars is delusional. If anything, it looks like the US is merely shifting focus, scaling back investment in the periphery, and preparing for the next phase of conflict against its main three enemies.

President Trump Takes Bold Step in Protecting American Interests: Withdraws from UN Human Rights Council and Defunds UNRWA

Watching Trump's end-stage clown theatrics again, signing pointless papers on live TV, and within the first two minutes, he starts ranting about how the UN and the international order are 'deeply unfair' to the US, wtf? They are more fair now.

The system was literally rigged in their favor entirely as they were the sole creators of it, letting them coast for decades, being an unproductive and destructive waste of oxygen for decades, while draining the rest of the world of their value.

Then he went on about how Palestinians shouldn't keep living in Gaza because it's just "destruction and death", a "pile of rubble" as if he forgot that it was the US weapons that destroyed it in the first place and that it was just fine before then, and suggested they be relocated to "nice places" in Egypt or Jordan that Saudi Arabia is going to pay for, haha. As if they hadn’t rejected that idea jointly yesterday and a hundred times.

Maybe these things are connected. The US keeps losing votes at the UN, with 70-90% of countries siding against them, whether it's on Israel, or smaller countries like Cuba, and Nicaragua, not to mention China. All their attempts to push anti-China resolutions have embarrassingly failed by overwhelming margins. And since they can’t win fairly in the WTO or WHO, they’re just… quitting.

Then he complains that the UN is ineffective at stopping wars or solving problems when the main reason it’s ineffective is the US vetoing anything that doesn’t serve its interests. The UN doesn't represent the actual global majority or what’s best or the most realistic for the world, based on a real balance of power, as it was designed by the US to be dysfunctional from the start.

Unipolar world is over. Spheres of influence is back. Too bad Russia shot itself in the shoot 3 years early to take advantage of this.

The unipolar world was certainly over already by 2008-9. Them admitting/realizing this only now in 2025 shows how low IQ and delusional westoids are in general. And Russia didn't 'shoot itself in the foot' but took away the remaining 10% chance the US had at defeating China.

There's degrees to everything. The unipolar world order might have been crumbling away since 2008, but US dominance is still very much a thing, back then and even today. As China grows stronger and stronger, they will began to chip away more and more at America's power base. Trump and his cronies are just starting to realize that they can't really stop China's rise anymore and can clearly see the trend, even if America today is still quite a bit stronger than China.

And yes, Russia very very much shot itself in the foot with the Ukraine war, to deny that is just delusional at this point.

No, it was gradually crumbling in the early 2000s, and then it fully crumbled around 2008-9, when Russia asserted dominance regionally again, stopped NATO encroachment on its sphere, the BRICS was first created, the US economic model got fraud-checked and exposed during the great financial crisis, and China overtook the US in electricity production already by that point, and also industrially probably even earlier.

but US dominance is still very much a thing, back then and even today.

No, the US can't even assert dominance on Niger, Chad, Houthis, Colombia, etc, anymore. They are clowns today.

As China grows stronger and stronger, they will began to chip away more and more at America's power base.

That already happened, they are now leading in perception polls on all continents besides Europe. They have more influence already on all continents except Europe, as shown by dozens metrics, and multiple UN votes that the US tried to initiate against China and failed big-time.

Trump and his cronies are just starting to realize that they can't really stop China's rise anymore and can clearly see the trend, even if America today is still quite a bit stronger than China.

How can a country that produces hundreds of times more ships, dozens of times more steel, cement, aluminum, electronics, batteries, coal, EVs, rare earths, solar panels, smartphones, and infinitely more HSR (since the US doesn't have any) be 'weaker' than the failed country that barely produces anything of importance nowadays? What can we base that 'power' on then? Don't listen to propaganda.

And yes, Russia very very much shot itself in the foot with the Ukraine war, to deny that is just delusional at this point.

Why, when they became a high-income and developed economy per capita, 4th economy in the world, per international orgs' definitions, thanks to massive productivity boosts and cutting inefficiencies thanks to that war? In contrast, the half of American Empire (EU) crumbled.
