Torpedos, are they still useful in a surface battle?

I though torpedos were aimed a couple of meters under the keel of the target...?

To break the back of the ship.

That is true but its not the actual expolsion that actually "breaks the back"

MK 48 ADCAP test a year or two ago. Damnnnnnnnnnn.

by the way, there is no effect counter torpedo system. Russia deploys one, but they claim only a 70% probably of success.

well, you have counter-torpedo countermeasure, maybe bd_popoye can enlight us, it's the US SLQ25 Nixie Torpedo decoy.

does anyone know the max speed of Chinese/Russian torpedo these days?

i read some article posted by one of the members on the latest Russian torpedo, very impressive. its a real carrier killer.

Before anyone brings up the Shkval, it is not an anti ship weapon, it is a weapon designed to be launched when an enemy torpedo is bearing down at your own sub, a revenge weapon in a way.

I actually don't know of any heavy-wheight torpedo mounted on a surface ship anymore.

The Nixie is basically a loudspeaker coupled with a pick-up towed behind a boat, it recieves the 'ping' from active torpedoes and sends it back amplified to two or three times its original strength.

Sorry guys:confused: not being a "surface sailor"(I was in avation) I really don't know that much about it other than it has to be towed. But I think the top speed it can be towed at is 20 knots..Not really sure about that.

I'm not really sure how or how well it works. i went to the USN web page and found no info on the NIXIE. It must be classified. Even Global security does not give too much info. Sorry:(

Re: Tropedos, are they still useful in a surface battle?

submarines have minitorpedos in order to paralyze the electronics of the arriving torpedoes and in order to overlay it with spurious signals

btw german navy has an experimental torpedo wich is more then 2 times faster then skval :nono:

Speed is indeed very impressive, but the problem is sound. A sub would never use a weapon that gives away its own position, if it wouldn't know for sure that it already has been found. A single sub vs. another lone sub would perhaps be a possible scenario where super-cavitation could be used, but how do you know for sure that your enemy is alone out there?

i dont think the skval starts with full speed, i think its launched outside the submarine usual torpedo tubes would have problems with such a pressure

I also think that's the case, anyone has anything more on this one? But the basic problem is there still, for modern sonars made to detect subs more quiet than the ocean itself a Shkval makes enough noice to make sure the opponents in the area all can get a (close enough) bearing down on the sub that fired it.
