NEW YORK (Dec. 12, 2017) Chief of Naval Operations Adm. John Richardson presents the George Van Cleave USO Military Leadership Award to Navy Aircrewman Helicopter 2nd Class Daniel Harlow at the 56th Armed Forces Gala and Gold Medal Dinner in New York City. Each year, the USO George Van Cleave Military Leadership Award is given to one service member from each branch who, through their selfless commitment to country, inspire others and uplift the spirits of their comrades, their families, and the American people. Harlow received the award in recognition of his heroic actions rescuing more than 50 civilians during relief operations following the devastation of Hurricanes Harvey, Irma, Jose and Maria. “My family didn’t really see it coming when I told them I was going to join the navy, and actually didn’t really believe I was going to do it. But I know they’re proud of me and glad I went through with joining the navy,” said Fernando. According to Fernando as he maned the rails and Bremerton slowly came into view he became excited and nervous causing him to be speechless.

“I honestly don’t know what I’m most excited for. I know I can’t wait to be back in Bremerton with my girlfriend, but I also can’t wait to be back home in Texas and see my family again,” said Fernando. As Fernando waits to walk of the ship he starts looking for places to eat on his phone. “I know girl, she’s going to be hungry but have no idea what she wants to eat,” said Fernando laughingly.

“I’m really excited to see her, we’ve been together for a while now, since middle school actually,” said Fernando. “It was great getting to hear from her when we were on deployment but can’t imagine what it’s going to be like once I get to see her again.”
