If you want to know the types of things the US Navy is doing with the Laser Weapons System (LAWS) which has been mounted on the USS Ponce for the last 2-3 years, watch this video, and realize that soon, this sort of system will be in use on other ships for close in defenses, and on aircraft as well.:

A woman is expected to break a major gender barrier in the Marine Corps by becoming the first female infantry officer to serve in the military branch next week, according to a Thursday report.

The female officer is expected to graduate along with her male counterparts on Monday after passing an intense combat course that was part of a 13-week training program, according to

The Post reports that the course is considered to be one of the most difficult military tests, with roughly 25 percent of students failing.

Thirty-two women reportedly tried and failed as of the spring of 2015 to complete the Infantry Officer Course after it was opened to women on a research basis in 2012.

Another four women, including the officer expected to graduate, have attempted to complete the course since 2015, according to the Post.
The officers just wrapped a three week combat exercise at the Marine Corps training center in Twentynine Palms, Calif., on Wednesday.

The female lieutenant is not likely to do interviews and opted to keep her privacy, according to the Post report, which did not provide her name.

The report comes almost two years after the Obama administration removed the remaining restrictions on women serving in the military.

Thought I would show everyone the enhanced Ford Self defense capabilities as they currently stand. These are just the weapons systems and do not include the new radars and other sensors that have been employed.

This post and the next two will outline the systems.

First, overall here is the layout. What you have are:

3 x Phalanx 20mm CIWS
2 x RAM Missile Systems (42 ready missiles) - can be reloaded at sea
2 x ESSM Missile Systems (16 ready missiles) can be reloaded at sea

Here's the forward ESSM and Phalanx 20mm CIWS:

That's very decent self defense for the carrier.

The Ford class has enough surplus electrical power to allow it to later offer both the Close in Rail-gun defense and Close in Laser defense, which I expect she will incorporate as soon as they are fully tested and ready.

She has plenty of room to be able to add these weapons, particularly aft, without taking away the other systems, which is exactly what I hope they will do.

She has the room and the power to place a rail gun and a laser on the big aft sponsons on both sides.

I am intending to show this on the model of the USS Enterprise I am building in 1/350 scale. CVN-80, the 3rd Ford class carrier.
