.Oh man...on March 18, 2016, this pilot does a heck of a job and saved several lives (usually five personnel man this aircraft) and saved a VERY expensive aircraft (...like $175 million each) when the arresting cable on the USS Dwight D. Eisenhower snapped as he landed.

Eight sailors suffered non-life threatening injuries on deck as they tried to get out of the way of the cable when it snapped, and the aircraft continues and goes off the end of the carrier.

But having applied full military thrust pulls up before plowing into the ocean.

The official Navy Report lauds the “phenomenal airmanship” by the Hawkeye’s pilot and crew. They train for these type of incidents, but when they occur, oft times it ends badly.

As reported by the Navy, the investigation found that Human error and improper maintenance were blamed for the mishap because maintenance personnel missed “critical steps” while working on an arresting gear engine.

The E-2 Hawkeye is the Navy’s all-weather, carrier-based tactical battle management airborne early warning, command and control aircraft. The E-2 is a twin engine, five crewmember, high-wing turboprop aircraft with a 24-foot diameter radar rotodome attached to the upper fuselage.

The E-2 Hawkeye is the most important aircraft of the airwing. Period.

Huntington Ingalls Industries announced today that its Newport News Shipbuilding division placed a 900-ton superlift into dry dock, continuing construction of the nuclear-powered aircraft carrier John F. Kennedy (CVN 79). As Kennedy begins to take shape in the dry dock, the ship’s cost and construction schedule continue on track with significant improvement over its predecessor, the first-of-class Gerald R. Ford (CVN 78).

“We continue to focus on reducing cost, and we are pleased with our progress,” said Mike Shawcross, Newport News’ vice president, CVN 79 carrier construction. “The incorporation of lessons learned from CVN 78 on to CVN 79—and major build strategy changes to construct the ship a different way—are having a significant impact on our construction efficiencies, just as we anticipated they would.”

WASHINGTON, D.C. (Sept. 13, 2016) This graphic illustration depicts the U.S. Navy's first live fire demonstration to successfully test the integration of the F-35 with existing Naval Integrated Fire Control-Counter Air (NIFC-CA) architecture. During the test at White Sands Missile Range, New Mexico, Sept. 12, an unmodified U.S. Marine Corps F-35B acted as an elevated sensor to detect an over-the-horizon threat. The aircraft then sent data through its Multi-Function Advanced Data Link to a ground station connected to USS Desert Ship (LLS 1), a land-based launch facility designed to simulate a ship at sea. Using the latest Aegis Weapon System Baseline 9.C1 and a Standard Missile 6, the system successfully detected and engaged the target.
