Re: Boeing's answer to the 4.5 gen aircraft market

The Iraqi's and the Serb's had ground control to guide them into place. Remember that they were often flying over their own territory where ground based radar would be of assistance.

Ground control was the standard Soviet tactic. It is a very regimented way to conduct air combat. They did not allow their fighter pilots to autonomously find and kill targets as US, Nato and Israeli pilots are trained to do. When the ground radars and communications systems are disrupted by electronic warfare their pilots are fighting with one arm tied behind their backs. Study how ground control failed the Syrians ( and some real live Soviet pilots that were flying Syrian marked MiG's ) when they fought the Israeli's in 1982 over the Bekaa Valley.

Evidence?

I don't know about mercenary pilots, but the Iraqi pilots would turn and run the instant their RWR's detected our radars. Very few stuck around to fight coalition aircraft. On the other hand, a fleeing jet was very hard for coalition pilots to hit, even with a Phoenix, so there weren't many air to air kills in that war.

according to janes, during the tanker war, iraqi using mercenary pilot to carry out long range attack against iranian oil terminal in kharg island.long range strike operation require tremendous skill, the aircraft according to the iranian is being refuel at saude air base.
during the USA invasion of iraq, USAF pilots encounter different breed of pilots, while large iraqi pilots simple flee the moment there RWR pick up the radar emission, but few do stay in fight.

Russian fifth generation fighter

There doesn't appear be a thread dedicated specifically to this subject.

Russia's futuristic 5th generation fighter aircraft (FGFA), PAKFA T-50, which has substantial Indian investment stake, will hold its maiden test flight tomorrow, reports said.

"Initially the flight was scheduled for today, but has been rescheduled for tomorrow due to bad weather," Interfax reported quoting an official of the KNAAPO aircraft plant situated in Komsomolsk-on-Amur city company.

Re: Russian fifth generation fighter

From the side the plane looks nearly identical to the YF-23 - shouldn't be called a Raptor-ski, but a Black Widow-ski >_>

But nah, good job russia. Hopefully we'll see more pictures at a faster rate for this one than we would compared to PLAAF planes.
