looks like they're short on funds, which they worked from nose to the tail, but due to problem with the fund they stopped after the intake........

Are you talking about the PAK-FA or the F-35 JSF? Or both? Haha.

I think it's possible for Russia to substantially improve the design of the PAK-FA, especially with money from energy exports and India's financial investment. I wouldn't worry about problems in military projects because military projects frequently have cost overruns, major problems causing delays, and many other hurdles.

The development of the F-14A to B had many problems. Some problems were never fixed or partially fixed, like the F-14's infrared sensor, TV camera, engines, fly-by-wire system, phoenix system, reliability, etc. Then there are other examples, such as the recent development problems with the F-22 and F-35.

In regard to an angular, stealthy housing for IR sensor(s), maybe the IR sensor can be put on the usual pivot point combined with a circular rail or x-pattern rail on the x-axis and a retractable/extendible base on the y-axis, or the IR sensor can be placed on some type of moving platform, then the IR sensor can shift positions to "look around" the angular distortions.

Re: Russian fifth generation fighter

Alot of people here have compared this T-50 to F-22 or F-35. As far as im concerned, Russia made their plane specifically to their needs...which maybe very different to American needs of F-22 and F-35. Therefore the planes would be different, and this difference does not mean one is better or worst than the other.

Same applies to China's future J-XX.

Ohkay, Infra_Man99, I see your point now. I spoke about the EOTS having performance issues due to angular shape - I did not think of the DAS at all at the time I was talking about the IR performance, which is an error on my behalf, sure.

I fully agree that the PAK FA should have an all-around IR detection system, and I also agree that trying to somehow stealthify a bulb shape casing for the forward-looking IR / OTS (or working with moving/retractable camera housings) would be a very good idea.

Our and India's needs. And possibly some other willing byers, in the future.

But yeah, the T-50 does have some differences. As all Sukhoi planes, for example, it has a quite long range, combat radius and good payload capacity (seems to be offhand greater than that of either of the US 5 generation planes). 3D TW seems to be also a design feature, which indicates that the plane is preparing for close combat just as much as BVR; then again, all Russian latest incarnations of modernized 4 generation planes (Su-35BM and MiG-35) are apparently 3D TW-capable as a design goal.

For all who is up to their nose with pride about Stealth Technology and how mother of all aeronautics awes it is, think again cos what's suggested here might not in fact be all that ridiculous...

Yes, stealth technology, eventually might not be that hot going into the future after all because one technology will be guaranteed to be defeated by another...

In other words: Applied sciences will null the gist of what stealth is all about and hence rendering it obsolete as what some countries in the world are now already putting into practice technologies which overrides the advantages offered by stealth... Following is a transcript to that effect:

Rough translation:

Chen Hu (narrator):
Fourth-generation fighter"s" (stealth fighter"s")
will not form the mainstream of fighters (won't dominate the sky)
may be short-lived (will possibly go obsolete)

I for one tend to be of the same school as this narrator is with respect to stealth technology cos, the science that came up with with stealth technology will be defeated by sciences designed to neutralizing or causes it to be nulled...

Ten years my opinion, stealth technology, just like the geometric swing wing fighter technology of olden days, will go the way of the doodle bird.

Put a note of it on your calendar 2015-2020 time frame and see if 'm correct on this one.

My take:

The T-50 is a joint venture similar to that of the Panavia Tornado which is between GB and W-German; it's like the EF- 2000 Typhoon which is a joint venture between certain members of the EU; it's like China's JF-17/FC-1 worked out between Pakistan and China; it's "probably" also like that of Japan's F-2 and that of Taiwan's F-CK-1 which are linked to American involvement or even investments... These are quality top notch products, yes, but... I wouldn't expect it to be the crème de la crème's high ends as the Rafale, as the Su-35; or what's in the F-22, therefore I wouldn't expect anyone to out strip the gist of what's in this latter list just yet...

My guess at general internal layout. Details speculative obviously. I kept the T-50 style canopy frame cos I actually think it looks cool.

Missile staggered that way don't really make much sense, it seems. To maximize space, one should slide every other missile down for the whole length of its wings. Otherwise it's a great drawing!
