When citizenry is drafted who do you think will wish to fight more? Those defending their homeland or those defending a puppet state far away from their borders?
Who has a larger nuclear stockpile with weapon systems capable of delivering them? Who has the better ABM systems that give regions a chance at survival?
These weirdo elites in power can only escalate there are many reasons for this beyond the geopolitical and strategic methods they use. It has deeper psychological underpinnings to it and this is imo the scary part. As things get worse I highly expect the "atlanticist" factions to turbo sperg and set even more wildly dangerous precedents between nuclear armed powers.
