So the goal here is probably to prevent closing of the pocket from the north, betting on the south flank alone isn't capable of cutting off retreat. It does mean the pocket around here will be pinched out soon as AFU should be pulling back from this bulge (mostly 33rd mechanized brigade in that area).

Sukhi yaly river will surely slow Russian advance in the south but If Russian forces take a bit more ground north and south... they will cover unflooded and flooded area with fire helped by spotting from elevated positions... They don't need to close the pocket anyway.

Ukrainian forces will pull back in flooded area under artillery fire and fpv attack... again.

The new Trump national security adviser supports allowing Ukraine to strike into Russian territory in order to increase US' leverage for a peace negotiation

It should've been obvious that Trump's "I'll end all wars" / "peace through strength" slogans are doublespeak meant to appease both the anti-war doves who want negotiations / diplomacy and the hawks who want further hegemonic bullying, threats, and escalation.
The pro-Trump/Putin bromance crowd is going to be disappointed...

Two can play that game. Just like the US bombed the Nordstream pipeline, the Russians can do the same to the pipelines linking Norway with the EU for example. These provide like half the natural gas the EU consumes. The pipelines linking the North Sea gas fields to the UK could also be bombed. They can provide the Houtis with Oniks missiles and close the Red Sea to Western shipping. With the Oniks and satellite targeting the Houtis can start sinking NATO military ships. Not just lumbering cargo vessels with AIS enabled.

If the US decides to directly attack Russian oil infrastructure, they better also remember that most of their refinery capacity is located in the Gulf of Mexico right next to the coastline and well in range of Russian SLCMs.

Russia should also soon put into service the latest version of the Kalibr.

Kalibr was originally designed to fit into submarine torpedo tubes. When fired from VLS cells much of the space in the UKSK VLS cell is unused. If you increase the length of the missile to fully use UKSK VLS you can double its range to 4500km and double the payload to a 1000kg warhead. This improved version of the Kalibr can be fired from any ship with UKSK VLS including the Yasen submarines. Each Yasen would carry 32 such missiles.

Stronger sanctions and more enforcement and no more restrictions for Ukraine are tolerable. But if they stop aid delivery to Ukraine, the Russians will win and conquer more territory. Overall that will be a good trade for Putin
