Another thing which has not been widely mentioned is how the Russians have been upgrading their rocket artillery in general.

For example the Tornado-G. Its rockets have 40 km range vs the 20 km range on the regular Grad. The improvements in the rockets are use of more modern high density propellant and composite casings vs steel ones.

The Russians have been applying these same technologies to the air launched rockets. Which means, say, an air launched rocket with 4 km range now has 6 km range instead and a much larger warhead.

In the case of the TOS-1 MLRS range has gone from 5 km to 10 km. This means they can fire the MLRS outside range of vehicle mounted ATGMs.

As old stocks of rockets are exhausted and the new models enter mainstream use, Russian rocket artillery is getting a massive upgrade in capabilities.

It's pretty incredible to me that there was no Russian military forces along that border. Especially after these photos shown by BBC with Russian fortifications along the border. Just another example how sloppy Russians are. It's like they border Mongolia there, not Ukraine.

German defense group Rheinmetall is set to sign a new contract with Ukraine to manufacture armored vehicles.

Rheinmetall CEO Armin Papperger told Bild newspaper that the company is interested in jointly manufacturing armored vehicles in Ukraine and that they could potentially start with Fuchs armored personnel carrier.

“We will start there with maintenance and repair work on operational vehicles and also want to produce armored vehicles as soon as possible, for example, Fuchs armored vehicles,” Papperger said.

The company boss added that Ukraine is also interested in the modern Panther main battle tank and the Lynx infantry fighting vehicle.

Recently, Armin Papperger told the German newspaper Handelsblatt that Rheinmetall had established a joint venture with Ukraine’s leading defense group UkrOboronProm to repair and manufacture combat vehicles. Rheinmetall owns a 51% stake in the joint venture. The German concern will also manage the company.

>Put forces in the checkpoint
>Get shelled
Great idea ...

As I said allready, lack of serious approach by the Russians. Even if they wanted to stop smugglers, they would be better organised. Heads should roll for that, in FSB ( it's officiall task is protecting the border ) and/or in Russian Army. But nothing will happen, as usual.

This is a highly unrealistic proposal. If making such production in Ukraine was viable, how come Ukraine is getting T-72 tanks upgraded in the Czech Republic and Poland? It is because they cannot reliably operate facilities in Ukraine. It is as simple as that. Prior to the conflict starting Ukraine had been upgrading dozens of T-64 tanks a year at its facilities in Kharkov and Lviv. So what happened?

it is precisely because this is such a destructive thing to do that russia is unlikely to resort to this unless situation is really dire...i imagine even China would criticize Russia should they make an attempt on the dams, since China has thousands of dams herself.

there is also the question of just how effective conventional weapons are on dams. there is no guarantee that they can bring the structure down.
The water levels obtained from dams are clearly helpful if the Dnieper become the border in the future. Getting rid of the dams make the river way more easy to cross, diminishing the number of choke points.

It also bring destruction of irrigations system in the Donets and Crimea.

this is a good point. to counter this russia will really have to up their production of iskander and kinzhal, in order to hit the airbases that house these f-16s.
They got score of Mig-29 and SU-25 and they got destroyed mostly in the air. F-16 will have the same fate in that hostile environment. If they don't use foreign pilots, controlled flight into terrain will be incredibly common with pilots without proper training because of the need of low level flying.
