(Deserter) US Navy SEAL killed in Ukraine

The US Navy confirmed on Friday that a member of its elite SEAL force was killed in eastern Ukraine, but said that Naval Special Warfare Operator Daniel Swift was in “active deserter status.”

Swift died on January 18, from injuries sustained in combat with Russian forces, an unnamed US Navy official told reporters in a background briefing.

“We can confirm the recent death of a US citizen fighting in Ukraine,” the State Department said in a statement, which did not name Swift. “We are in touch with his family and providing all possible consular assistance. Out of respect for the privacy of the family during this difficult time, we have nothing further to add.”

Swift’s service record showed that the Oregon resident enlisted in 2005 and received medals for taking part in the Global War on Terrorism, and the campaigns in both Afghanistan and Iraq, according to Time magazine. He was listed as going absent without leave (AWOL) in March 2019.

AWOL people can travel from a US airport without being flagged?

Germany’s foreign intelligence service (BND) is alarmed by the losses the Ukrainian army is suffering in the eastern Ukrainian city of Bakhmut, according to a report.

The army is losing a three-digit number of soldiers every day fighting against Russian forces in Bakhmut, Der Spiegel reports, citing information it had received.

Ukrainian BMP tried to assault a Russian fortified position. The BMP was joined by other Ukrainian BMPs. They were spotted by a Russian drone and quickly got spammed by Russian artillery.

Terrifying power of the TOS-1.

Transcript:
TRIBUN-TIMUR.COM - Russian Reconnaissance Troops have again discovered a camouflaged Ukrainian Army stronghold in Zaporozhye. The fort is said to still contain Ukrainian soldiers and ammunition. The recording was widely circulated on Telegram on Thursday, January 19, 2023. In the uploaded narrative, it was stated that the reconnaissance group found another Ukrainian Army stronghold in the direction of Zaporozhye. "This time, the fire damage was caused by the TOS-1A "Solntsepyok" system. Personnel are believed to be destroyed," the Russian Reconnaissance Forces claimed. Drones were previously deployed to confirm the location of the fort. Once found, TOS-1A was immediately launched. The huge explosion was clearly recorded by the drone's camera.

"As seen in the footage, there was recently a massive explosion at Ukrainian troop positions in Novoselovskoye. The aftermath of the TOS-1A "Solntsepek" attack launched by Putin's troops. It can be seen that the brutal attacks that were launched three times managed to ravage the target position."

Ukrainian pickup with crew hit by a Russian tank at the Zaporozhye region. The non fortified, fairly open terrain at this region makes it ripe for open field fighting. We are seeing a surge of videos coming from this area and we can expect to see more.

yes but i imagine russia is also pretty thin in that sector. kind of hard to believe that they could build up without being noticed. or this could be an attempt to make the ukrainians panic and scramble out of bakhmut? either way pretty impressive, did not think they could pull of an offensive in the south.
If Russia did manage to mass troops without anyone noticing, then UA is in a bad spot. The next few weeks will be interesting.

Hardly. Still don't see any FABs, no RBKs, no ODAB, when those start landing on Ukro positions then the RuAF is flying. Right now the tactical aircraft of the Russian airforce are playing war with rubber darts and how many aircraft lost?

Really disappointing performance. Probably best just to leave the dirty work for the Mils, the Ka's, and the Grach.

However there is a video on telegram posted today supposedly of a pair of Su25 lofting rockets and they seem to land in the same area, as good as unguided MLRS so maybe that tactic is fairly effective

Im not saying the RU airforce is good... but more so saying Ukraine AD has been degraded.

i recall earlier this year there was a lot noise about who the winter benefits and who gets to go on the offensive. looks like this round goes to the russians, winter offensive in full swing now. ukraine needs to hold the line until spring thaw and start building up defense around sloviansk-kramatorsk, turn that into a meat grinder for the russians if you will.
Mariupol, Severedonetsk, Lisichansk, Volnovakha, Soledar, Bakmut rinse and repeat...

Desperation must be pretty high in the West. Washington is out of control.

The U.S. wants to take Russian military equipment from Russia’s Latin American allies and "donate it to Ukraine".

Russia will keep a close eye on the US attempts to urge Latin American countries to hand over weapons to Ukraine, Kremlin Spokesman Dmitry Peskov said on Friday.

The Russian presidential spokesman thus commented on a statement by a Pentagon representative that Washington was working with nine Latin American countries to urge them to hand over available Russian weapons to Ukraine in exchange for the delivery of US equipment.

Responding to a question about whether this news came as a surprise for Moscow, the Kremlin spokesman said: "In general, it is hard today to imagine anything that can be a surprise."

"Here it is very important [to bear in mind] the legal restrictions of any deliveries to third countries. This is because any deliveries are, of course, conditioned by certain commitments of those countries that receive military equipment," Peskov pointed out.

"Of course, we will keep a close eye on this situation," the Kremlin press secretary said.

Commander of the US Southern Command General Laura Richardson announced on Thursday that Venezuela, Cuba, Nicaragua and six other Latin American countries had Russian military equipment and Washington was working "to replace that with US equipment if those countries want to donate it to Ukraine."

After the US disarmed the European "allies", now it is the turn of the Asian ones.

SEOUL, Jan 19 (Reuters) - The U.S. Department of Defense has asked its forces stationed in South Korea to provide equipment to help Ukraine in the war against Russia, the U.S. military said on Thursday, adding the move has "zero impact" on its operations in the Asian country.

U.S. Forces Korea (USFK), which has some 28,500 troops in South Korea, said the move is part of U.S. efforts to help Ukraine with its inventories.

"This has zero impact on our operations and our ability to execute on our ironclad commitment to the defence of our ally, the Republic of Korea," USFK spokesperson Col. Isaac Taylor said in a statement.

USFK declined to provide further details, including what types of equipment and how much has been requested or already transferred.

The statement comes after the New York times reported earlier this week the United States was diverting munitions in Israel and South Korea to Ukraine for use in the war against Russia.

South Korea's policy is not to supply lethal weapons to Ukraine. Seoul has sought to avoid antagonising Russia, both for economic reasons and because of the influence that Moscow can exert with North Korea.

A U.S. official said in November Washington was in talks with South Korea to buy artillery shells to send to Ukraine, though Seoul insisted that the United States must be the ammunition's end-user.

Jesus, what is actually wrong with the US' own equipment? Why would they scrap the barrels for soviet stuff instead of just equipping their own full formations with Ukranian citizens and sending them in?

Probably, US is paranoid about its own stockpiles because they want to keep being able to threaten with an offensive in the China direction. But the fact that not even 300 Abrams and enough supporting vehicles/artillery can be spared for Ukraine tells a questionable picture of how much of the US reserve equipment is actually operable.

When this war is done, or even when this whole cold war is over, it'll be extremely interesting to say the least to study what exactly was happening within the ranks of the west.
