The War in the Ukraine

Question for those who know their history: If you had to guess where Russia stands closer to right now? closer to the Russia of russo-japanese war or the Russia of post 1941 war against the Nazis.
Meh, its a limited scope war, at least from Russia's perspective. They're not committing everything and are keeping plenty of reserves for future skirmishes with NATO.

If you want to compare, it will probably end up somewhat similar like the USSR-Finnish war.

In the initial stages of war, nazi led propaganda constantly embellished Finnish "victories" while Russia itself had an information blackout on what happened on the front until the final stages of the war.

Turns out, historians later would vindicate both sides. The Finnish had created a remarkably strong defense line which was much more strategically sound than the Maginot and their mobilisation was succesful. And the Russians had done a good job in breaking their lines using effective rolling offensives despite adverse weather.

Question is if Russia really is only going for the claimed territories, or if those are merely a pretext towards greater designs on the Ukraine.

"United States advises Ukraine to withdraw its forces from Artemovsk (Bakhmut)," Agence France-Presse reports, citing a senior American official.

Ukraine should not defend the town of Bakhmut at all costs and should instead seize the opportunity to launch a major counterattack against Russian forces, a senior US official said on Friday.

This industrial city has become the epicenter of the war raging in eastern Ukraine, with massive artillery strikes, slow progress and heavy casualties on both sides.

Bachmut has also become an important political and symbolic award, with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky visiting the front lines in December, just before his spectacular trip to the United States to meet the president and address Congress.

But a senior official in President Joe Biden’s administration says the focus on Bakhmut is hampering Ukraine’s larger task of preparing for a widely anticipated spring offensive aimed at making major gains against the Russian occupiers. in the south of the country.

According to the official, who spoke to reporters on condition of anonymity and was not quoted verbatim, Bakhmut’s timing is more favorable to Russia, given its greater artillery resources and troops. available.

However, according to the official, a Russian victory here would not lead to any significant change in the war, as Ukrainian forces would fall back to well-defended positions.

Rather than wasting so many troops and ammunition on a strategically insignificant target, the United States is advising Ukraine to withdraw these forces to renew and join US-led training programs aimed at building a stronger force. sophisticated and better armed capable of launching an offensive in the south.

The official noted that counterattack weapons are pouring into Ukraine, including several hundred armored vehicles that will be needed for the mobile assault forces.

But training takes time, so Ukrainians need to consider whether to stay in Bakhmut or prepare for broader strategic action, the official said, adding that Ukrainians may not have the resources to relieve the two challenges.

if they are going public with this it must be because the situation is really dire. also big news that seemed to be missed here today is the development on the zaporozhia front. would have never guessed that russia suddenly gained the ability to make a push all across the front? how many troops were deployed there?

That and the fact that Russian aircraft are able to fly over where they weren't able to before.

heard that it was initially just recon finding areas abandoned by UAF possibly to defend Bakhmut or gather somewhere else i wonder if it is an actual offensive or they are just nabbing abandonded areas.

There are six Ukrainian brigades defending that area, so I estimate around six Russian brigades .

Hardly. Still don't see any FABs, no RBKs, no ODAB, when those start landing on Ukro positions then the RuAF is flying. Right now the tactical aircraft of the Russian airforce are playing war with rubber darts and how many aircraft lost?

Really disappointing performance. Probably best just to leave the dirty work for the Mils, the Ka's, and the Grach.

However there is a video on telegram posted today supposedly of a pair of Su25 lofting rockets and they seem to land in the same area, as good as unguided MLRS so maybe that tactic is fairly effective

I'm trying to source this map but seems they have left the south unprotected to go all in on Bakhmut

yes but i imagine russia is also pretty thin in that sector. kind of hard to believe that they could build up without being noticed. or this could be an attempt to make the ukrainians panic and scramble out of bakhmut? either way pretty impressive, did not think they could pull of an offensive in the south.

Just probing maybe, where all the Ukrainian troops of Kherson side have gone anyway? Nothing to guard there anymore on the west bank... they all have been absorbed in Bakhmut ?
