Thailand, (from memory) have large ethic Chinese populace. Over 25% of the populace can trace their ancestry root to China.

Also, its funny that nothing was ever said, no sanctions imposed by the western nations on the fact that the military overthrow an elected government (more times than I can remember). And Thailand is under Marshall law!

Where as China is still under sanctions fir something happened 30 years ago! Figures

and if nothing else, could be used as the Pacific geography test LOL I admit I swapped Tuvalu and Niue while I'm keen on geography)

seriously now, personally I thought the US might be donating a significant money to Solomon Isl. and Kiribati because of WW2 Guadalcanal and Tarawa, but apparently I was wrong (I mean "significant money" at the scale of islands in the Pacific, not "significant money" at the Pentagon's scale)

Fantastic footage of a great elder statesman Lee kuan you (hope I spelt his name right).

Putting to right those sterotypical of western view of China and all things Chinese. Just loved the way he put those arrogant, ill-informed and prejudice interviewers down without being overtly obvious!

The sad thing is western countries have not learnt one thing from this. They still view China, and all things Chinese exactly like they did all those years ago!

If it wasn't for the fact the footage is in black and white, and we knew Lee kuan you, the footage would not look out of place and time if we played that to a young audience now!

Enjoy

I see in the news, that the MSM have made a big thing about indonesia sending warships and fishing boats to "protect their interest" in the SCS. There are trying to stir up trouble down there, and guess what, and who is the aggressor?

So I thought it best to show this video from the BBC (can't be bias, it's from the BBC!) Showing US involvement 60 years ago when, indonesia expelled ethnic chinese (armistice international anyone)?

It was the CCP Chinese with little resources that responded to their plight! It was quite a traumatic time for Chinese everywhere. My mother was telling about this time years later.

Are there any historians here? I came accross this, and I can't believe this map showing viet nam claimed all of south China upto the Yangtze river!

I know borders ebb and flow, but upto the Yangtze? Come on.

I know there's the Yue people which I'm one. Yue 粵 is bai yue. and its the basis of cantonese. So if they claim southern China on this basis, then surly China can claim northern viet nam on the same basis!

This may appears intended to show the original Yue people's geographic area. It's not really land claimed by Vietnam, since there was no Vietnam and not even a certain dynasty that could be said to be Vietnamese until about the 10th century, by which the Yue people had fragmented. So, this is more a map of ethnicities than anything else.

As for the language components, while Yue language contributed a lot to the areas where the people used to occupy, modern Cantonese is more like a creole of Chinese varieties coupled linguistic drift from Tang dialect. And this increases as you go farther South.
