All this talk of the J-20 reminds me of the J-8, its a large, long fighter aircraft that seems to have an emphasis on payload and range and by the time it enters service many of the J-8Ds from the 90s would be reaching retirement

Yup, thats' the J-8G, Shenyang's 'SEAD on a budget' aircraft. Not the most technically advanced aircraft to undertake such a mission but its cheaper than a JH-7A I guess and its very fast, with long legs. Franky I'm surprised Shenyang hadn't tried this sooner.

Since when J-8 is cheap and has longer leg than FBC-1/JH-7?

J-8 is a cruel joke, not cheap to make (~2/3 of the cost of a brand new J-10 whilst J-10 can beat the crap out of this thing easily, actually, even FBC-1 can beat the crap out of this thing easily based on the results of the internal military excerises, thats why nowadays China navy aviation use FBC-1, a fighter-bomber, instead of their J-8, a supposed interceptor, for intercepting missions.

The only reason that SAC still get orders of the crap J-8 is for welfare purpose to prevent SAC from bankruptcy.

If I am top brass of PLAAF and I wanted to give welfare to SAC, why not build more J-11B instead of J-8II?

J-8II is a third generation plane that no longer qualifies for the air-to-air combat doctrine of this era. It was intended to go fast and climb high while sacrificing substantial amounts of manueverability but unfortunately couldn't go that fast or climb that high.

Maybe I'm just seeing things because its so early in the morning and I haven't had any coffee yet... but is that an IRST system behind the cockpit there?

It looks more like an integrated tactical recon pod. I can understand wanting to minimize disruption to J-10/J-11/J-20 development, but why not choose the JH-7 platform?
