nine high-end anti-submarine warfare frigates from the end of the next decade under a deal with BAE Systems worth AU$35 billion (U.S. $26 billion).

The announcement was formally made Friday at the ASC shipyard in Osborne, South Australia, by Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull, Minister for Defence Marise Payne and Minister for Defence Industry Christopher Pyne.

A version of BAE Systems’ City-class Type 26 ASW frigate, now under construction for the British Royal Navy, will be acquired under Australia’s SEA 5000 Phase 1 project, also known as the Future Frigate Project.

Referred to as the Global Combat Ship―Australia, or GCS-A, during the competition, the design will be known as the Hunter-class in Royal Australian Navy service and will replace the Navy’s existing Anzac-class frigates.

There has been speculation in the media that the decision to go with BAE may be driven, in part, by Australia’s desire to secure strong terms with the U.K. as it negotiates a series of new trade agreements

Payne noted Friday that the GCS-A design was selected because it was the most capable ASW platform.

“This is a decision entirely based on capability, the best capability to equip the Navy in anti-submarine warfare,” she said.

Regardless, news of BAE’s win was welcomed in the United Kingdom, with Secretary of State for Defence Gavin Williamson referring to it as the “biggest maritime defence deal of the decade.”

“This £20 billion ‘deal of the decade’ demonstrates how British defence plays a huge role in creating jobs and prosperity and is ‘Global Britain’ in action,” he commented on social media. “Great to see our military and industrial links strengthen with Australia.”

The ships will be built by ASC Shipbuilding in South Australia, using local workers and Australian steel, under the Turnbull government’s continuous naval shipbuilding program.

“What we are doing here is announcing our commitment to build the nine Future Frigates,” Prime Minister Turnbull said. “The Hunter-class frigates will be the most advanced anti-submarine warships in the world.”

Finland has selected the Israel Aerospace Industries-developed Gabriel anti-ship missile to replace its current MTO85M system.

The acquisition of the Israeli missile system was approved by the Finnish defense minister Jussi Niinistö on July 5.

The IAI-delivered system will be known as SSM2020 in Finland and will be installed on Hamina-class missile boats and the new Squadron 2020 vessels which are scheduled to start construction in 2019.

Finland’s current MTO85M systems (based on the Saab-developed RBS15) will reach the end of its lifecycle in the 2020s. The new SSM2020 missiles are expected to remain operational until the 2050s.

IAI’s Gabriel was selected over four other systems offered, including Kongsberg’s NSM, MBDA’s Exocet, Boeing’s Harpoon and Saab’s RBS15.

The Finnish defense ministry said the main selection criteria included acquisition costs and schedule, lifecycle costs and security of supply, and compatibility with existing infrastructure and defense systems.

The ministry said the contract was worth EUR 162 million, with a EUR 193 million option. The quantities of missiles to be purchased will not be made public, it was further said.

The purchase will include launchers, missiles, simulators, test equipment, spare parts and training. The deliveries will take place between the years 2019 and 2025. SSM2020 will be maintained in Finland.

anyway I'm curious what the armament would be if they were ever built: the budget for the five of Type 31 is assumed to be one and a quarter billion Pounds,
so what does a quarter of a billion pounds buys in addition to the hull?

I thing it's going to be nothing except of the main gun and a small array with Sea Ceptors, making Type 31 an oversized OPV, as:

"... an Iver Huitfeldt frigate ... about $207 million, goes to weapons, sensors, and other electronics, which drive the cost of modern warships worldwide."

plus I've read somewhere the cost per 1 m of length = 1 m Pounds (I think this includes propulsion, LOL if you know what I mean now); assuming it's true,

has been reduced and its warhead can be changed depending on the mission. Future upgrades may include concept optimization for sea or land targets. The range of the Mk. IV would have to be significantly larger than others versions, over 1 000 km.[
