ABC News said:
Masked gunmen shouting "Allahu akbar!" stormed the Paris offices of a satirical newspaper Wednesday, killing 12 people, including the paper's editor, before escaping in a getaway car. It was France's deadliest terror attack in living memory.

French Interior Minister Bernard Cazeneuve said security forces were hunting for three gunmen after the noon-time attack on the weekly, whose caricatures of the Prophet Muhammed have frequently drawn condemnation from Muslims. Twelve people died and eight were wounded, including four critically, officials said.

French President Francois Hollande called the slayings "a terrorist attack without a doubt" and said several other attacks have been thwarted in France "in recent weeks."

There was no immediate claim of responsibility.

Clad all in black with hoods and machine guns and speaking flawless French, the attackers forced one of the cartoonists at the weekly Charlie Hebdo at the office with her young daughter to open the door.

The staff was in an editorial meeting and the gunmen headed straight for the paper's editor, Stephane Charbonnier ? widely known by his pen name Charb ? killing him and his police bodyguard, said Christophe Crepin, a police union spokesman on the scene. Minutes later, two men strolled out to a black car waiting below, calmly firing on a police officer, with one gunman shooting him in the head as he writhed on the ground.

Ten journalists were killed and two police, Crepin said, one of them assigned as Charb's bodyguard and another who had arrived on the scene on a mountain bike.

"Hey! We avenged the Prophet Muhammed! We killed Charlie Hebdo," one of the men shouted, according to a video filmed from a nearby building and broadcast on French television. Other video images showed two gunmen in black at a crossroads who appeared to fire down one of the streets. A cry of "Allahu akbar!" ? Arabic for "God is great"? could be heard among the gunshots.

The gunmen abandoned their car at the northern Porte de Patin and escaped, Paris police said.
Corinne Rey, the cartoonist who said she was forced to let the gunmen in, said the men spoke fluent French and claimed to be from al-Qaida. In an interview with the newspaper l'Humanite, she said the entire shooting lasted perhaps five minutes.

France raised its security alert to the highest level and reinforced protective measures at houses of worship, stores, media offices and transportation. Top government officials held an emergency meeting and Hollande planned a nationally televised address in the evening. Schools across the French capital closed their doors.
World leaders ? including President Barack Obama, German Chancellor Angela Merkel, Russian President Vladimir Putin and British Prime Minister David Cameron ? condemned the attack, but supporters of the militant Islamic State group celebrated the slayings as well-deserved revenge against France.

Both al-Qaida and the Islamic State group have repeatedly threatened to attack France. Just minutes before the attack, Charlie Hebdo had tweeted a satirical cartoon of the Islamic State's leader giving New Year's wishes. Another cartoon, released in this week's issue and entitled "Still No Attacks in France," had a caricature of a jihadi fighter saying "Just wait ? we have until the end of January to present our New Year's wishes."

Apparently one wounded officer was shot while laying on the ground. Another, Counter-terrorism officer was killed after being wounded when his throat was slashed by one of the attackers. At this point it looks like two attackers were dropped off who then attacked the offices. They later made off by hijacking a car and have not been caught yet as of the time this post was made.

How did an attacker manage to slash a CT officer's throat?? And still get away??

Apparently, two officers were present during the attack. One was a guard for the editor because of the many threats on his lfe.

Another arrived as the shooting was occurring.

I do not know which was which....one an anti-terror officer, the other a more normal officer. Apparently both were wounded, one oin the offices, and the other on the street, and then were killed buy the terrorists.

But the info is still very new and sketchy.

It is said the attackers used kalashnikovs. That seems an odd type of weapon to me for such an attack.

1. Has it been confirmed they were using Kalashnikovs? Witnesses are unlikely to have extensive military training and therefore be sure of what the terrorists were using.

2. It doesn't seem odd at all. They're ubiquitous weapons on the black market and a weapon of choice for many criminals, not just terrorists. Given all assault rifles are banned for sale to the public in France, there's no reason why a Kalashnikov would be harder to get in France than something else.

Latest reports indicated:

Four cartoonist confirmed to be dead, including the Editor in Chief (Stephane Charbonnier).

Georges Wolinsky, Jean Cabut, Stephane Charbonnier and Bernard Verlhac

One Economist/Journalist Bernard Maris also amongst the dead.

Charbonnier had two special police protection officers with him in the meeting room when the shooting happened.

Cartoonist, Corinne Rey aka Coco was threatened at gun point at building entrance, with her child, to open doors for the attackers. She had just picked up her child from day care and was returning to her work. She hid under a desk when the shooting started.

The first person being killed is a security guard in the reception before they went upstairs to the news room.

The gun men seemed to know exactly what they are doing and who are their main targets and where they may be located.

Most of the killing happened in the second floor newsroom. Shooting reported to have lasted 5 minutes.

First police to arrive on the scene were three bicycle police officers, however, they retreated and took cover waiting for backup.

A third accomplice was in a black car outside waiting, and the gun men fired many shots into a police car blocking their escape route. They then made the get away, and in the process knocked over several pedestrians.

The fatal shooting of a police officer on the street happened on a nearby residential street, when they stopped their get away car.

A short time later, they crashed their initial get away car, hijack another and continued.

Somehow police lost track of them shortly before the mid-day.

Photos and videos of the attackers have now emerged. Definitely AK-47 (or variants), attackers in full combat fatigue and balaclava.

Some local residents have taped the scene where the attackers executed the wounded police officer on the residential street.

There are several amateur footages. The rifle noise is certainly very loud. The attackers appeared to be calm. This certainly isn't intended to be a discrete operation.

The thing that I picked up from this story was the apparent professionalism of the attackers and that this was in marked contrast with the vast majority of the attacks that have been carried out over the last few weeks.

This led me to consider what has been the other big story over the holiday period - the Syrian refugees found floating in ships in the Mediterranean. I considered it because of a simple logical train. Those trying to leave Syria and enter the West are unlikely to be supporters of President Assad and most likely to be family members of active opponents and members of the various anti regime militias.

Of course most of the refugees will be nothing more than ordinary civilians, but this flow does give an almost perfect cover for fighters from the most militant of Islamist fighters in the Syrian/Iraqi conflict to infiltrate into Europe.

I do most certainly wonder if this is indeed a factor in what we have seen happen in Paris today.

I think that it is more likely that these were radicalised French citizens who had been to Syria, had some training and then come back to continue their "jihad".

Are French police armed? I just saw the raw footage of that officer getting shot and he was looking at the terrorists before they shot him in the head. I didn't see a gun any where near him on the ground. I'm not sure that event happened at the start or the end but if it was the end which seems to be because the terrorists get out of the car to kill the officer and then they turn back and get into the car and take off. Not sure why that officer would be exposed like that if he didn't have a gun. Maybe that incident wasn't in the vicinity of this newspaper and they came upon this officer.
