^ T-50 has demonstrated TVC with the engines it currently uses, and I believe it can also theoritically supercruise with its current engines. But regardless your point stands true. F-35 doesn't have TVC nor supercruise, it's still considered 5th gen.

The generation concept is vague and doesn't really have clear definitions. I personally dislike it.

Yeah, like exactly how super is super maneuverability? How much stealth? Super cruise and short take off are probably the only specific ones.

Exactly! The whole concept of fighter generation was invented quite recently and like Blitizo said it is most likely an attempt to sell more planes. Remember how both the F-18E and the F-22 were considered "next generation fighters" back in the simpler times?

I'm looking forward to seeing boeing and LM trying to sell off the idea of "sixth" generation... Apart from expected improvements in stealth and aerodynamic performance what will the benchmarks be? Optionally piloted? controlling multipled ucavs? direct energy weapons? :p

Fun times... (sarcasm).

YF-23 didn't have TVC. 5th generation? Or M-D fail?

I vote directed energy weapons. Planes pew pewing active defence/offence lasers with optional rail gun mounts? Hell yes. Macross Universe here I come!
EDIT: I also elect full optical invisibility.

most russian literature about T-50 is based on technical aspects such as the engine troubles and difficulties.

perhabs because there is more public information available regarding T-50 ? we dont know anything about j-20. Not even its size.

i think that any technical discussion about j-20 will, at the end of the day, be a flawed one because of that. Soon or later, we will have to make assumptions and people cant agree on assumptions. We need data.
