The USMC is spending a lot of $$ on the AH-1Z and UH-1Y upgrade project. ROCA can simply piggyback on USMC project with local co-production and tech transfer.

People in positions of power for acquisitions would prefer if domestic industry went belly up so they can just import everything made abroad.
I could rant about this until the sun comes up, but it's pointless.

Upgrading the existing Super Cobras is not Taiwan's first choice because the ROCA needs to replace the Kiowas. As for the Hueys, I doubt they would last long enough even if they were upgraded.
So it will still require newly-built helicopters, even if they could be locally produced. Which then are actually better for the Army is a matter of opinion, but that may not be the same thing as what's best for local industry.
This thing about retiring/mothballing the Mirages. Can someone please clarify for me:

Is it an official view / is it likely to happen?
What's the current status of this plan?

Forget about it, the rumor started from nowhere! It s a nonsense with a totally outdated F-5 fleet...
According to the PRC military expansion, an upgrade for the Mirages would be surely considered as vital though. These birds are better interceptors than most of F-16 standards in town. If it s a question of price, France is not the only country that can upgrade the M2000-5 to the best M2000-9 multirole standard.

Oh C'mon! Are they the same people closed to US interests (...) and who want to push a F-35 deal with the US, terribly more costly than maintaining or upgrading a Mirage fleet?! Check taiwanese opinion out about this kind of enormous military expenses...
