Eight soldiers, both serving and retired, were sentenced to prison terms ranging from one to 13 years for plotting to defect by flying a military aircraft.

I wonder what the aircraft was. If you just want to defect, couldn't you simply go over there normally, by land? Not like the PRC has any need to study the planes in ROC inventory anyways.

It’s a CH-47 Chinook.

Not so simple; they might not be able to obtain an exit permit. In my opinion, flying a CH-47 Chinook is not a bad choice. The CH-47 Chinook has a top speed of 170 knots; they would only need about 15 minutes to cross the median line.
