French - and I m pretty sure you were waiting for this neat answer.

I don't think France can afford to pay the price.
Remember the pain suffered by the Netherlands when a Dutch shipyard sold submarines to Taiwan. And that was a quarter of a century ago. No country can afford to sell SSK's to Taiwan.

I don't think either, not anymore...

:( And that's a bad calculation for your declining country. Let's see what could happen to your military industry in the next decade, if you refuse such big contracts with the respectable Republic of China. Don't you pay a stiff price for the bad business done with communist China? I keep the faith that France is still defending democratic voices everywhere in the world. Sharing the same flag colors.

If i was Taiwan then i wouldn't buy any French weapons anymore. The 6 LaFayette class frigates that the French sold to Taiwan didn't come with any weapons or electronics or fire control systems on board. So why did Taiwan buy those ships then ? Because the French paid bribes to members of the Taiwanese Navy. Those 6 LaFayette class frigates maybe the slickest looking ships in the Taiwanese Navy today but is one of the weakest when it comes to its capabilities because the Taiwanese still have difficulties fitting American and Taiwanese weapons and electronics on board a French ship and make it work like they should. The 60 Mirage 2000 fighters that Taiwan bought from the French are so expensive to operate that it eats up a disproportionate amount of the air force's budget. And there for limiting the training time that the pilots have in that plane and taking away resources from other parts of the air force. And the problems with the cracks in the turbofan blades a few years back has almost caused the Taiwanese air force to mothball them.

That's because the customer (Taiwan) wanted US made weapons, electronics, FCS etc... on-board.

We do not hear too many complaints from the Singaporeans about their Formidable class (same with the Saudis and their versions of the La Fayette)

I much rather prefer to keep the faith that the two side will be united under a single Chinese flag with the CPP leading them. Those KMT elitist needs to quit living under a fake democratic regime to appease the Chinese Communist haters. Nobody's in their right mind would risk economic hell with the PRC for the sake of keeping a few Taiwanese elitist rebels happy.

What big contracts? The damage done to the Dutch economy a quarter of a century ago was much more than the profits on those submarines. It meant the end of submarine and nuclear power reactor vessel production in the Netherlands ( not that any reactor vessel had yet been made :) ). Today the price would be much higher.
Beside, what's the point? If a Taiwanese government were to declare independence the Chinese government would declare the ports and airports on Taiwan closed, take over Taiwan owned plant in China and invite that government to think again.

Dream on.

What would you rather do: Sell six submarines to the ROC for a one time deal and see the PRC buy six hundred Airbus airliners and fifteen Areva nuclear reactors with a profit margin of 8% instead of seven hundred Airbus airliners and twenty five Areva nuclear reactors with a profit margin of 10%?

Always the same song with chinese bots. The so famous big deals with China re leading europeans to dramatic unemployment rates, and the closings of plants for good. Besides helping local "partners" to copy european know-how. The last Big deal signed with Mrs Merkel for plenty of A320 all built in Chinese plants, made me laugh to tears.

No Swearing!

The LaFayette class frigates are good ships. Of course Singapore and Saudi-Arabia got the full systems unlike Taiwan. The story is that France and Taiwan signed the deal for the 6 LaFayette class frigates back in 1991. But soon after France came under pressure from China and then the French decided to strip the ships of their electronics and weapons and essentially sold to Taiwan empty hulls. Now no one in their right minds would buy those ships under those condition so the French bribed members of the Taiwanese Navy. There is even a court case last year about this scandal where the French shipbuilder had to compensate Taiwan for the LaFayette deal. If Taiwan wanted the empty hulls of the ships for American systems and weapons then why need to pay bribes ? Why did Taiwan go to court over the deal ? Why did Taiwan recieve compensation from the courts over the deal ?

The Mirage 2000's that Taiwan got has its air refueling and ground attack capabilities deleted and even got a special designation Mirage 2000 Di/Ei as opposed to just D/E. Once again this is probably done as a concession to Chinese pressure.
