Syrian Crisis...2013

No big surprise here.

The US is giving anyone ample time to get into position and gather intel on the US fleet launching a lot of Tomahawks.

Russia is going to get one of its electronic eavesdroppers down there and soak up as much as they can.

This will not be the last US strike. Picking up as much intelligence as possible will boost Russian exports. Are any Chinese spy ships also headed there?

Are any Chinese spy ships also headed there?

I doubt it. If there are any they're days or a week away from the Mediterranean. If China gets involved it would undermine the Sino-US relationship because both countries economies are so integrated and dependent upon each other too much to spoil it.

If the US do strike, they're going to strike military targets such as Syrian SAMs, radars, and airfields. It's going to be a limited strike, just to show the US means business.

They better not kick things off this Friday! I got personal plans and prefer not to cancel them.

The good news is Syria is GMT +3 hours and odds are the TLAM's will launch after dark which means OH WAIT!! DAMN! ok they BETTER not start shooting before 2300 Zulu or after 0500 Zulu Saturday at least.

There is a lot of talk how reluctant president Obama is to attack Syria. And that he is only doing it for the "red line" he has set. And that his only doing it to save face for himself and America. I don't think this is correct. If this was the case then he could have said lets have a international investigation in to the chemical attack and then see based on the result what to do. But he has pushed for war almost immediately as the news came out about the chemical attack and was very quick on sending warships towards the Syrian coast. He has even gone as far as to exaggerate the number of casualties of the attack by having John Kerry stating that there where 1429 deaths from the attack. But most other sources only claim between 285 to 500 deaths. The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights which is a FSA linked "organization" (consist of one guy in London) has even challenged the American government to give the names of the victims as his own numbers show only about 300 deaths from the attack. After that Obama had to back down some what and say there where only about a thousand dead. Its very clear that Obama is keen on attacking Syria. But the question is why ?

He only went to the congress and senate to get some political backing after he saw that pole after pole shows that about 91% of the American people are opposed to a war against Syria. The support for a US attack against Syria is only in the single digits.

As for this thing turning into a quagmire. That won't happen as long as there are no ground troops involved. But once the bombing starts then America is committed to "regime change" in Syria and if the "limited strikes" won't topple al-Assad then other actions will follow. Possibly a second more extensive bombing of the country in the future.

The United States Navy can do the following if Russia chooses to shoot down Tomahawks or illuminate US aircraft:
- jam Russian radars

They could try , but is not that easy , with potential jammers far from Russian flotilla .

- launch giant ECM attacks frequently

Same as above .

- equip Syrian rebels with anti ship weapons and provide them the locations of Russian ships with daily updates as well as training

Anti-ship weapons are not exactly small , and they require lot of training to properly use . Btw , I don't think that US has any shore batteries of Harpoons currently (someone correct me if I'm wrong) . Not to mention that US would not want to give such sophisticeted weapons to some of the rebels (political disaster for Obama administration) .

- launch cyberattacks against Russia's C4I systems

Unfortunately , Russian C4I is much more "traditional" and less sophisticated than US , so they are not much susceptible to cyber-attacks . Unlike American :D

- have a virginia class submarine lay mines around the locations of the Russian ships, and claim that it's for Syrian vessels

Laying mines is act of war , cuts both ways . Not to mention it is very difficult to lay mines around moving flotilla with ASW platforms . Mines are usually laid around choke points and ports .

- blind Russian satellites with ground based lasers

Impossible . Military satellites are fast moving targets in low orbit . You could destroy them , but this is act of war .

- force Russian ships to tune into US psychological broadcasts

Yeah , right . :D:D:D:D

- have a AGM-88 lock onto and destroy a Russian radar and call it a freak accident

Act of war . Russians could then launch missile strike on any American installation in the world and call it "freak accident" .

Simple answer : CALIPHATE . American (and Western) policy in last 30+ years was and is to allow formation of Sunni caliphate under control of Saudi Arabia , Qatar and other oil-rich Arab monarchies . This is the price US pays for their support of US dollar ( dollar backed by oil) . To put it simply , if major oil producers stop denominating oil prices in US dollars , whole system would crash down in days with dollar plummeting and interest on US treasury bonds soaring .

DefenseNews said:
MOSCOW — Russia has sent a reconnaissance vessel from its Black Sea fleet to the coast off Syria as Moscow anxiously watches Western plans for military action against the Damascus regime, a report said Monday, Sepotember 2, 2013.

The SSV-201 intelligence ship Priazovye, SSV-201, a Vishnya Class intelligence Ship, started its voyage on Sunday evening from its home port of Sevastopol in Ukraine “to the appointed region of military service in the eastern Mediterranean,” a military source told the Interfax news agency.

“The crew has the mission ... of collecting operative information in the region of an escalating conflict,” it added. The source said that the ship’s deployment was carried out within the minimum time possible.

The source said that the ship would not be a formal part of the group of warships from the Russian Navy currently in the region and would be reporting directly to the general staff in Moscow.

A source in the general staff had told Interfax last week that Rusia wanted to receive the maximum information about the possible military action in the interests of Russian state security.

“We intend ... to thoroughly analyze the tactics of the protagonists in a possible conflict,” a general staff source told the news agency.

Russia has kept a constant presence of around four warships in the eastern Mediterranean during the Syrian crisis, rotating them every few months.

Russia has seven of these purpose built, 3,470 ton Intelligence Ships that were specifically built to gather SIGINT (Signals Intelligence) and COMINT (Communications Intelligence) from potential adversaries. This one, the Priazov'ye, was commissioned in 1987 and serves in the Russian Black Sea Fleet.

Still about a week left before any US attack against Syria. Still not too late for China to send a spy ship there. Or do you think that Russia will share the intel they gathered on the US strikes with China ?

Maybe..I don't think they will learn anymore than they already may know. Having been in this type of situation I'm sure the USN is operating in ENCOM conditions.. No electronic emissions or......

and the US can do the same to the Russians.

Well, in the past srikes against Iraq and Afghanistan, Somalia, etc. the Russians have not had their Intelligence vessels right on the door step with our missiles literally potetenially flying right over their heads.

And those missiles communicate with C&C, Sats, etc. So their will be SIGINT and COMINT in the air. Whether it is anything new to them or not...I can't really say. Bit I know the Ruskies are putting themselves into position to make the most of it if there is anything they are not already aware of.

I am still hoping the US House sends a deafening "NO" to the Obama administration and we avoid all of thois. We'll soon see.
