Liu sets new world hurdles record
China's Liu Xiang broke the world record in the men's 110m hurdles by clocking 12.88 seconds on a night of phenomenal performances in Lausanne.
American Dominique Arnold also dipped inside the old mark of 12.91 secs, taking second place in 12.90.
Earlier, the USA's Xavier Carter ran the second fastest 200m of all time, clocking a stunning 19.63 secs.
Tyson Gay ran a personal best with 19.70 secs for second, while Jamaica's Usain Bolt took third in 19.88 secs.
20-year-old's Carter's time has only ever been bettered by Michael Johnson's world record 19.32 secs at the Atlanta Olympics in August 1996.
Liu, the Olympic champion, jointly held the previous 110m hurdles world best with Britain's Colin Jackson, who ran 12.91 secs in 1993.
Jackson said: "There's no need to commiserate with me - Liu, 23, had matched Jackson's time, set by the two-times world champion in Stuttgart, on his way to Olympic gold at the 2004 Games in Athens.
He said: "I feel perfect. I can't believe it. Everything is a dream.
"I never thought I could break the world record. I'm feeling very tired, very happy and very excited."
American Marion Jones continued her renaissance by winning the women's 100m at the Super Grand Prix meeting in a time of 10.94 secs.
Jones's much-anticipated clash with Sherone Simpson failed to materialise when the Jamaican withdrew just hours before the race because of injury.
Pole vault world record holder Yelena Isinbayeva looked set to exit her competition after two failures at 4.79m, but bravely raised the bar by four centimetres and escaped elimination.
The 24-year-old then sailed over 4.90m with her last attempt.
Leonard Scott of the United States led from start to finish to win the men's 100m but in a modest 10.05 secs despite the balmy temperatures.
Olusoji Fasuba of Nigeria was second in 10:09 with the same time as Michael Frater but edged the Jamaican on the photo finish.
Kenya's Janeth Jepkosgei posted a world season best in the women's 800m, clocking 1 min 56.66 secs.
Mozambique's Maria Mutola was runner-up in 1:56.77, while Zulia Calatayud of Cuba finished third in 1:56.91.
American Michelle Perry posted a season-best time of 12.43 secs in the women's 100m hurdles, edging compatriot Damu Cherry by .01 secs.
Brigitte Foster-Hylton of Jamaica was third in 12.49.
Shadrack Korir of Kenya smashed his personal best time in the men's 1500m, winning in 3 mins 31.97 seconds.
Compatriot Daniel Kipchirchir was runner-up in 3:32.12 with world record holder Bernard Lagat third in 3:32.19.
American Bershawn Jackson won the 400m hurdles in 47.77 secs, with Greece's Periklis Iakovakis second and South Africa's Alwyn Myburgh third.
