and only ONE NBA championship..1986 ...just sayin'..

What??? I don't think they won it all in 1986 (Boston did). Houston got TWO NBA championships, 1993-'94 and 1994-'95.

It shows one thing: the risk of focusing on centers. Out of the 5 centers photoed, two (Yao Ming and Ralph Sampson) had to retire early because of injury. And both of them had to leave the game at the prime of their career and were considered the best center in the game at the time when they retired. Who knows what would happen if they were given another 5-7 years in the league... Look at Dirk. He finally won a Championship in his 13th season. Even the King himself did not win it all until his 9th season. Yao only played 7 seasons and Ralph Sampson only played 4... It is always risky to focus on big centers.

Elvin Hayes only went to Houston at the end of his career. So that doesn't count. The only center who spent majority of his career in Houston would be Olajuwon and he got Houston two Championships.

Well that's the unique Houston NBA tradition, the Rockets always has good centers from the 1980s through today.

It's always worth watching the rookies developed though. Who did they draft this year?

PHI/KOR - TICKET CONFIRMED TO SPAIN: Philippines End a 27-Year Wait to Enter Final

10/08/2013

MANILA, Philippines (27th FIBA Asia Championship): There come moments in sport which are simply indescribable. There are wins that come in sport which go beyond the mere statistics. Philippines’ 86-79 win over Korea on Saturday, which took the home team of the 27th FIBA Asia Championship to a title clash against Iran was one those epochal moments in sporting history.

The win, which took Philippines to the title round of a FIBA Asia Championship for the first time in 27 years – after the 1986 edition at Kuala Lumpur, when incidentally they won the title beating Korea in the Final – also booked the hosts the second of the three berths available from the event to the 2014 FIBA Basketball World Cup to be played in Spain from Aug 30-Sept 14 next year.

An 11-0 run that opened the second half combined with some tight defending in the end game took care of the business end of things to ensure Philippines’ victory, but the win itself marked a much bigger moment than many of that 26 editions of this competition has seen so far.

MANILA (FIBA Asia Championship) - Iran and the Philippines have shown Asia will be strongly represented at next year’s FIBA Basketball World Cup in Spain with a high quality FIBA Asia Championship Title Game in front of 19,989 fans in Manila.Despite missing star centre Marcus Douthit through injury, the Philippines gave the bigger Iranians all they could handle before falling 85-71, succumbing to a constant offensive rebounding disadvantage."We had been waiting for this championship for two years," said Iran centre Hamed Hadadi, who was named the tournament's MVP."I can't wait to get this trophy back to my country. My team played hard together and it is the best feeling in the world."Philippines coach Chot Reyes walked away with a smile on his face and convinced Iran would be a formidable opponent for any team at Spain 2014.
