i think most of the electronic component would need to be replaced... and interior need to be cleaned.

well perhaps not replaced certainly removed for drying and inspected the hull its self would also need inspection cleaning and possible repair.

electronics are vulnerable to water but not totally so. If you use the proper methods the water.can be removed with little issue. Like getting your cell phone wet and putting it in rice overnight.

USA may sell 14 used CH-47Ds to South Korea
Print
By: GREG WALDRON SINGAPORE 19 hours ago Source: Flight

South Korea could obtain 14 used Boeing CH-47D Chinook helicopters from US army forces stationed in the country.

The proposed $151 million deal would be conducted under the US Foreign Military Sales (FMS) mechanism, according to a statement by the Defense Security Cooperation Agency (DSCA).

If the sale is approved, the aircraft would be transferred to South Korean forces incrementally as US army units take delivery of new-build CH-47Fs. The proposed deal would save the US army about $13.4 million that would otherwise need to be spent on demilitarising or transporting the aircraft.

Aside from the 14 CH-47Ds, the deal includes five more Honeywell T55-GA-714A turbine engines for use as spares. Other equipment such as radios, marker beacons, navigation systems and other avionics are also included.

The DSCA has not given a timeframe for the proposed deal.

South Korea's Joint Chiefs of Staff (JCS) will approve a plan on Tuesday to build three more Aegis destroyers to complement the three it already has to bolster defense against North Korea and its Asian neighbors, military officials said.

JCS Chairman Choi Yun-hee will preside over a meeting later in the day with senior officials to finalize the plan to build three 7,600-ton Aegis destroyers between 2023 and 2027 with an estimated budget of 4 trillion won (US$3.8 billion), a senior JCS official said.

South Korea already operates three Aegis-equipped guided missile destroyers, which were jointly produced by South Korea's Hyundai Heavy Industries Co. and Lockheed Martin of the U.S.

The latest decision comes shortly after Seoul on Sunday announced its new air defense identification zone that will cover a reef and other islands off the southern coast of the Korean Peninsula. The move is meant to counter China's unilateral decision on Nov. 23 to expand its own zone.

The Navy made the request to have three more Aegis ships a year ago to better deter nuclear-armed North Korea, but it has taken on new urgency in recent months as tensions have simmered in Northeast Asia over territorial and historical disputes between Asian nations.

The JCS had planned to approve the plan later this month, but it moved up the schedule as Seoul is preparing to step up patrols in the newly declared zone, including the submerged reef of Ieodo, which is controlled by South Korea.

Once the ships are in service, South Korea will be able to create three mobile squadrons to better defend its territories, such as the Dokdo Islets in the East Sea and the Ieodo Ocean Research Station, according to military officials.

A mobile squadron can be made up of two Aegis ships, 4,200-ton destroyers, two 3,000-ton submarines, one transport ship, two 3,000-ton submarines -- which can be supplemented by maritime reconnaissance planes -- and one replenishment ship, according to a study commissioned by the state-run Defense Acquisition Program Administration last year.

Three more KDX-IIIs is significant. They had hoped to do this from the beginning. But six of these vessels, which are the largest, most heavily armed AEGIS vessels on earth, will be a very powerful force.

IMHO, this hull and general arrangement is what the Burke III should be based on, though with a different weapons fit and all Mk-41 or a mix of Mk-41 and Mk-57 launchers.

S Korea's KAI sells fighter jets worth US$1.1 billion to Iraq
Thursday, December 12, 2013, 17:43

SEOUL - South Korean defence contractor Korea Aerospace Industries Ltd (KAI) has signed a deal with Iraq to export 24 light fighter jets valued at US$1.1 billion, the company said on Thursday.

The deal to supply FA-50 aircraft also includes training for Iraqi pilots and other support for the Iraqi Air Force for the next two decades, which could push the total value of the deal to US$2 billion, the contractor said in a statement.

The FA-50 is a light attack variant of the T-50 Golden Eagle supersonic trainer that was co-developed by KAI and US defence firm Lockheed Martin Corp.

The Iraqi version of the FA-50, labeled the T-50 IQ, can be armed with air-to-air and air-to-surface missiles, machine guns and precision-guided bombs along with other munitions, KAI said.

KAI has previously exported a T-50 variant to Indonesia and is pursuing deals with the Philippines and Chile.

South Korea has been to capture a larger share of the global defence market with its fighter jets amid a projected sharp increase in demand for military equipment over the next decade.

Delivery to Iraq will begin in April 2016 and will be made over a year, a company official said.
