SEOUL, March 28 (Yonhap) -- South Korea signed a US$420 million contract Friday to export 12 FA-50 fighter jets built by Korea Aerospace Industries (KAI) to the Philippines under a government-to-government deal, the state arms procurement agency said. The FA-50 is a light attack variant of the T-50 Golden Eagle supersonic trainer that was co-developed by KAI and U.S. defense firm Lockheed Martin. It is the most advanced variant of the T-50 family operated by the South Korean Air Force. Philippine defense chief Voltaire Gazmin, South Korea's Defense Acquisition Program Administration (DAPA) commissioner Lee Yong-geol and KAI CEO Ha Sung-yong attended the signing ceremony held at the Philippine's defense ministry.

KAI will deliver the jets in the next 38 months under the government-to-government program guaranteed by the state-run Korea Trade-Investment Promotion Agency (KOTRA), in the first such deal with the Manila government. The contract comes after South Korean President Park Geun-hye and Philippine President Benigno Aquino III in October signed a memorandum of understanding on expanding defense cooperation between the two nations. The Philippine contract is expected to boost the South Korean aircraft maker's overseas bid for T-50 family jets, following deals with Iraq in December and Indonesia in 2011.

While its Own Navy Waits, Canada Sells Military Helicopters to the Philippines

By Steve Mertl | Daily Brew – Wed, 26 Mar, 2014

There's a certain amount of irony in word that Canada is selling new military helicopters to the Philippines when it's in its third decade of trying to procure replacements for the navy's ancient Sea Kings.Postmedia News reports the sprawling Pacific island nation will spend more than $100 million to buy eight Bell 412 helicopters from Canadian Commercial Corporation, a federal Crown corporation that helps industry with government-to-government business. The purchase, along with the purchase of 12 Korean-built jet fighter-trainers for $420 million, is part of a program to bolster the Philippine military against growing Chinese pressure in the South China Sea.
Those Bell 412's are old and small second hand choppers, not to be compared with the larger, but I think even older, Sea Kings or the larger, and failing, putative successors to the Sea Kings.

The Philippines has signed a contract for 12 Korea Aerospace Industries FA-50 fighter aircraft. The deal is worth $420 million, with all aircraft to be delivered within 38 months after the contract goes into effect, says KAI in a statementThe long-awaited deal was signed between the governments of the Philippines and South Korea, KAI adds. The announcement marks an important step for Manila, which has no operational fighter aircraft after it retired its Northrop F-5s in 2004. During the 2000s its focus was primarily on counterinsurgency missions in the southern Philippines, but Chinas increasing assertiveness in the South China Sea has prompted Manila to rethink its conventional capabilities. The FA-50 is a logical choice for Manila because the aircraft, based on the T-50 advanced jet trainer, can serve in both training and light combat roles.Powered by a single General Electric F404 engine with afterburner, the FA-50 is entering service with the South Korean air force, and in late December Iraq signed a $1.1 billion contract for 24 aircraft. In 2011, Jakarta signed a $400 million deal for 16 T-50s, which is designated the T-50i in Indonesian service.

South Korea is doing a brisk business with this very decent fighter/attack aircraft.

Outside of South Korea, they have now sold over fifty aircraft to three different countries.

At around $35 million each, they are a good investment.

F/A-50 can use AIM-120 (2) not only AIM-9.

Singapore have ordered 6 A330 MRTT for replace 4 KC-135.
And also SAMP/T for replace Improved Hawk use yet Aster 30 on its FFG Formidable, great ships.

DND Looking at Improved and Enhanced Versions of Raytheon MIM-23 HAWK (SAM)

By Priam F. Nepomuceno

MANILA, March 30 (PNA) -- The Department of National Defense (DND) is looking at the possibility of acquiring improved and enhanced versions of the Raytheon MIM-23 HAWK (Homing All the Way Killer) surface-to-air missiles (SAMs).The HAWK is a US medium range SAM.The DND stated that acquisition of this weapon aims to protect the country from air threats to its shore-to-ship missile (SSM) launchers which it is planning to acquire for the Philippine Army at P6.5 billion. The SSM project consists of 12 launchers, trailers and tracking systems and missiles that could be fired to hit naval or sea targets. It will be carried out through “limited source bidding", a process where certain companies are invited to submit bids for the program.

The HAWK is capable of intercepting and destroying any hostile aircraft, drone, or rocket that may be sent to incapacitate or disabled the Army's SSM system. It was initially designed to destroy aircraft and was later adapted to destroy other missiles in flight. The missile entered service in 1960, and a program of extensive upgrades has kept it from becoming obsolete.Israel, one of the operators of the HAWK missile, have upgraded the Phase 2 standard with the addition of a Super Eye electro-optical TV system for detection of aircraft at 30 to 40 kilometers and identification at 17 to 25 kilometers. They have also modified their system for engagements at altitudes up to 24,000 meters. By Manuel Mogato and Rosemarie Francisco

MANILA (Reuters) - An agreement on U.S.-Philippine defence cooperation, expected to be signed this month during a visit by President Barack Obama, will be a clear sign of a U.S. "rebalance" to Asia despite U.S. preoccupations elsewhere, the Philippines' top diplomat said. The deal will enable the sharing of Philippine bases, an increase in the rotation through the Philippines of U.S. ships, aircraft and troops, and will reassure U.S. allies of support against a rising China."There is full resolve on the part of the U.S. to fulfil their commitments on this Asia rebalancing, not only in terms of defensive security but also in terms of enhancing economic cooperation," Foreign Affairs Secretary Albert del Rosario told Reuters in an interview late on Monday.

The deal will boost the Philippines' surveillance capabilities in the disputed South China Sea, del Rosario said, as it strives to keep in check an increasingly assertive China.Even without the agreement, the Philippine military is getting more support from the United States. This year, the Philippines will get $50 million under U.S. foreign military financing, the largest amount in more than a decade, and $40 million from a U.S. global security contingency fund. The funding will be used strictly to boost naval capability, with the Philippines possibly getting a third Hamilton-class high endurance cutter, del Rosario said.Military sources have told Reuters the United States plans to rotate to Philippine bases a squadron of fighters, P3C-Orion long-range maritime surveillance aircraft, and a littoral combat ship after the pact is signed. The United States has also promised to help install coastal radars to help the Philippines watch it its maritime borders.
