Re: ASEAN military news

to clarify its not a dust cap its a dust cover. The cover opens on its own via a spring mechanism when the bolt moves like when the weapon is fired or a round is chambered or ejected. But it does not close after a shot is fired automatically it has to be manually closed it being open does not affect the operation either So when I pointed it out I meant that only one of the M16s in the picture had evidence of being fired. As only one had a open dust cover and troops engaging targets are not going to close the cover.
If they decided to fire the moment the weapons bolt moves it trips a switch and the cover pops open to let the shell casings out.
is different from a AK series weapon in which the dust cover doubles as the fire selector. In that case the AK shooter has to open the cover by flipping it down selecting his fire mode at the same time. Most other weapons dustcovers move with the bolt cycling open and closed with each shot. Save for open bolt guns.

So they can still shoot? Sorry... I am a pencil pusher when I am in the Army, I only have limited experience with the M16S1 and SAR80, also I have not come across such a thing, only know the safety switch on the rifle.

Yes they are still leathal
on.a side note the M16s1 had one unless it was broken off. Its a metal flap that sits over the bolt. Works like a mousetrap.

Ahhh... I remember now, yeah there is one... I always thought mine is closed as a default. Never actually pay any attention to it. That is where the empty cartridge are ejected from and the dust cover... well covered that area.

Singapore will move their Paya Lebar Air Base to Changi.

Actually... This might be the woe of a small country. We lack space of everything.

The main issue I am troubled with was... Changi airport was where our civilian airport was and where civilian aircrafts lands and takes off. If the military airbase was stationed there... wouldn't security be a problem? and what about exercises? When the air force is having a big exercise or training, are they going to stop civilian aircraft from coming in... this cannot be the case as a huge part of our yearly revenue came from all these air traffic.

I remember in one of my visit to my home town in China Shantou, on the way back, I am stuck in the airport the better part of the night according to one of the staff in that airport, he mentioned that the PLAAF is staging a massive exercise, and all civilian aircrafts that is slotted to land or take off on that day was either grounded or diverge to nearby airports (or hongkong airport). Hope this won't happen in Singapore where civilian air traffic to Changi airport is so much heavier than my small hometown airport in China.

MANILA — The United States turn over to the Philippine military six patrol boats Wednesday to be used in a southern region where armed Muslim militants are active, the military said. The small-unit riverine craft (SURCs) are part of a US programme to train and equip foreign military forces for "counter-terrorism", Philippine Navy chief Vice Admiral Jose Alano said in a statement."The SURCs will be deployed to augment our sea-based forces to address terrorism and lawlessness such as the current crisis in Mindanao," Alano added. Designed to patrol rivers and coastal areas, the high-speed, small-unit riverine craft can carry 14 fully-armed marines and six crew members, Philippine marine spokesman Captain Rowan Rimas told AFP.

And although there are no mentioning of military coorporation, I am wondering if we will soon hear some arms trade or join venture - like the Shenyang J-31 or AFC program. Indoesnia had gotten quite a bit of Chinese arms and should be familiar of the Chinese way of doing business.
