The Philippines are claiming Chinese aircraft overflew their airspace. Some uninformed persons on RP boards etc think the aircraft came from the PLAN CV-16..

Flankers wishing to fly that far will be on the edge of their maximum range. I SERIOUSLY doubt that Chinese fighters flew over anywhere near Zhongye Islands. As for the idiots claiming that the jets were from the Liaoning, I have nothing to say except to slam my head onto the table in disbelief at their lack of intelligence.

The navy said, here are 2 of the 5 ships of the Project-159 class ships are Soviet aid. However, before moving on to Vietnam started in 1978, the ship was used in the Soviet Union under 10 years should be more active just 10-15 years old by the vessel, the damaged equipment not to replace (in Russian factories no longer produce components for submarine launched in the 1960s anymore). A senior Navy officer said Vietnam, in fact in the years 1990 - 1995, 159 vessels respectively only function ...

Very exciting news for Malaysia! These will be 1st rate, world-class frigates and very serious, modern, and capable surface combatants. Six is a great number for Malaysia.

I am looking forward to seeing them built, launched and commissioned.

Great article.

Sorry, ManilaBoy, the Petray Class are terribly outdated and would be sunk in a heartbeat by any modern Corvette sized vessel, much less any modern frigate. They would also not stand a chance against any modern Diesel Electric submarine, (particularly AIP) much less any nuclear attack sub.

They are good for coast guard duties and for fighting pirates, drug cartels, or enforcing fisheries or economic zones against commerical or small boat intrusion, etc.

Now, they may be able to help modern helos and other modern vessels against diesel subs in the littorals as a part of a task force where those modern assetts actually prosecute the targets while the Petrays perform picket duty.

But, as I say, if they are alone against such a sub, they will not stand a prayer

Malaysia attacks armed Filipino clan in Sabah
At least 27 reportedly killed in clashes in Malaysian territory occupied by armed clan from the Philippines.

Malaysia attacks armed Filipino clan in Sabah
At least 27 reportedly killed in clashes in Malaysian territory occupied by armed clan from the Philippines.

Malaysian soldiers launched an attack on Tuesday against an armed clan in the Philippines, part of a continued effort to end a three-week long standoff in Sabah after violence in recent days that already killed at least 27 people, a Malaysian government official said.

The operation to take over an area occupied by about 180 Filipinos, dozens of them armed, began early Tuesday, a spokesman for Malaysian prime minister Najib Razak said.

The government sent seven army battalions to the area on Monday to reinforce police, Al Jazeera's Florence Looi reported, adding that an "all-out assault" could follow. No casualties have been reported in Tuesday's attack.

Ismail Omar, Malaysian police inspector-general, said in a press conference that the ongoing military operation is centred in the area of Kampung Tanduo, which has been "sealed off" within 4km radius.

A firefight first broke out on Saturday, when the Malaysian police tried to force the group to surrender, initially killing at least 10 people. The armed group launched a counter-attack killing at six Malaysian police, but also losing an additional seven of its members, raising concerns the violence was spreading.

"After the first attack, I have asserted that the intruders must surrender and if they refuse the authorities of this country will take action," Najib said in a statement.

The ongoing violence has already displaced many native Filipinos living in Sabah. There are an estimated 800,000 Filipinos living there.

On Sunday evening, about 300 Filipinos have arrived in Zamboanga in southern Philippines after being "deported" from Sabah, Al Jazeera's Jamela Alindogan reported.

"A crackdown on Filipinos are expected to intensify in the coming weeks," Alindogan said.

Earlier, Philippine president Benigno Aquino had called on members of the Sabah clan to surrender, saying negotiations can only proceed if they lay down their arms.

Centuries-old territorial claim

Members of a Muslim royal clan, who call themselves the Royal Sulu Army and hail from the southern Philippines, landed in a coastal village in Sabah on February 9 to claim the territory as their own, citing ownership documents from the late 1800s.

They are also demanding an increased payment from Malaysia for their claim as the rightful owners of Sabah.

The Malaysian government continues to pay the Kiram clan of Sulu a supposed annual rent of $1,500 for the use of more than 73,000 square kilometres of land in Sabah.

Malaysia has refused their demands and, along with the Philippine government, has urged the group to return home.

The violence has sparked a political crisis ahead of elections for both the Philippine and Malaysian governments and raised concerns of instability in resource-rich Sabah state.

The crisis also comes a crucial stage of peace negotiations arranged by Malaysia between the Philippine government and the Moro Islamic Liberation Front, the largest Muslim rebel group in the southern Philippines.

The group has ignored appeals from Aquino to leave Sabah or face prosecution at home on charges of triggering armed conflict.

After a successful test firing of its main weapons system, the Philippine Navy's newest warship is heading for its next stop, the Panama Canal.Philippine embassy to Washington defense and naval attache Capt. Elson Aguilar said the BRP Ramon Alcaraz will have an almost two-month journey to the Philippines. "The Alcaraz left Charleston, South Carolina, on Monday, more than a year after it was acquired from the US Coast Guard. Aside from Mayport and Panama, the Alcaraz will also stop in San Diego, Honolulu and Guam enroute to Manila," the Philippine Embassy said in an article posted on its website Wednesday, Philippine time.

Earlier Wednesday, the BRP Ramon Alcaraz successfully test fired its main weapons system off the coast of Florida. Capt. Ernesto Baldovino, the vessel's commanding officer, described the weapons system as "very reliable,” and having a "high degree of accuracy."Baldovino, in his report to Aguilar, said the BRP Ramon Alcaraz’s Italian-made Oto Melara rapid-fire cannon fired 15 rounds, including three for calibration and 12 at floating targets two to three miles away.

The BRP Ramon Alcaraz, the Philippine Navy’s newest and most modern warship acquired from the United States, is ready to boost the government’s efforts to defend the country’s territorial waters. The Philippine Embassy in Washington said the former Hamilton Class cutter, one of 12 cutters introduced to the US Coast Guard in the 1960s, but were later modernized through a rehabilitation modernization program in the 1980s through 1992, has been fitted with an anti-ship harpoon missile. It added that the warship has also successfully test-fired its 76mm main gun off the coast of Florida.

After which, the ship sailed on Monday towards Panama Canal on its way to the Pacific. The Department of Foreign Affairs said the ship would travel for almost two months and is expected to arrive on Philippine shores by mid-July or August.“The BRP Ramon Alcaraz (PF-16), a decommissioned United States Coast Guard cutter converted to a frigate, is due to arrive in the country either by July or August. It has been fitted with anti-ship harpoon missile,” the DFA said
