Re: ASEAN military news

I was referring to the Philippines as a whole, which did get short changed badly if their leaders made a bad deal to waste hundreds of millions of dollars of taxpayer money so that they could get a few million in kick backs.

Yeah I know... I was just saying that Philippine's culture of corruption is so ingrained into the society that what we think are outrageous, for them its very much normal. This is why it is foolish for them to pick a fight with China, every hard cash they spend buying foreign hardware is money going out of the economy, China on the other hand, their military spending is only 2% of GDP and they are building everything in their own backyard, so every dollar they spend only simulate the economy, because the money stays within the economy circulating within China.

Poor Philippine, if they really want to get strong, they should really work on improving themselves from within before looking for trouble.

well its not like china is not corrupt either. but even if philippine is not corrupt and has decent economy, they still can't go up against china due to size and population of their country, there is only so much they can do with limited resource etc. its easier to just buy it then improve itself. india should know that ;) china was force to make its own stuff due to western embargo.

You don't understand, if you want to say "is not like if China is not corrupted either" Then by that standard you can say all nation on earth are corrupted one way or the other, but the difference is, in some nations like Philippine, corruption is part of daily life, that it is so normal, it is not just in the politician's problem, it effects down to the very poorest people. Corruption is effecting the day to day running of the country, just go read that article fully to have an understanding.

Oh and yes size and population plays a huge role, but that does not mean they have hopeless by default, look at Japan, it is just as big and have similar population, but yet Japan's military is very formidable compare to China's. After WW2, Philippine is the richest Asian nation in Asia, it enjoyed higher living standard than Korea, Japan, China. But why have they wasted it all? If not for the culture of corruption?

Re: ASEAN military news

"These frigates are warships. These have anti-air, sub-surface, they have anti-submarine (capabilities). What we are getting are really meant for war," Gazmin said."

1.)As clear an attempt at saber wrattling as you are ever likely to see in modern politics. Although I somehow doubt anyone in the western press will pick up on it.

2.)$275m for two obselete frigates nearing the end of their useful lives seems like a pretty bad deal for the Philippines tbh. You really must wonder how many years these FFGs have got left in them. The F22Ps China sold to Pakistan in contrast cost $175m each, and that's including fully TOT to allow local production of the ships.

No offence intended, but you really have to wonder just what exactly the Philippines government is playing at with such antics. Paying through the nose for antiquated ships that are of no threat to anyone yet making empty threats about getting these ships for war.

1.)Sir, how can that be called saber rattling? The SecDef merely stated that PH Navy is finally getting a ship that can survive wartime.

2.)As if PH had a choice. They need it immediately to address the situation it is currently facing. And hey, PH is not planning to commission them immediately once they get tied down to a PH naval base. They will undergo major overhaul, SLEP/zero-timing.

Re: ASEAN military news

That deal for an old Italian ship seems like a pretty bad deal for the Philippines to me. That money is 2/3 the cost of a brand new frigate.

They would go for a shiny-new ship if PH navymen had the capabilities to maintain and operate high-end equipment. The PH Navy is trying to avoid what happened to Nakhoda Ragam class corvettes.

"What we are getting are really meant for war"

1.)As for the Italian frigates, the news article indicates 9 months for overhaul. How reliable is that, I don't know. PI had many choices over the decades. The recent reactionary response with the increased military hardware procurement is the result of their own decision over the years to never really maintain a force that the US helped create with the surplus hardware they had.

2.)Interesting, it appears the trio is still languishing at a shipyard in England. For the amount the PI deal has for the Italian frigates, she could have probably procured these. I wouldn't really say these ships are high end and if the PI is willing to maintain an ex-Hamilton corvettes available, the more I believe the Italian deal fleeces PI taxpayers and contains some serious kickbacks for the people involved.cutter with a turbine engine, these ships would be easy to maintain as they are all diesel. The more I learn about some of the export

1.)There were many choices, but there were many factors that stalled PI military modernization. Commies and corrupt politicos, '97 Crisis, and the insurgency that kept PI bleeding.

2.)The PH Navy could have bought these corvettes, but what they needed are frigates to complement their Minimum Credible Defence Force.

Anyway, since this is a government-to-government deal, do you think the Italian officials would agree to pay PH DoD officials their kickback?
