D&S 2017: Indonesian Navy receives second SIGMA
A second SIGMA 10514-class guided-missile frigate built in Indonesia was handed over to the Indonesian Navy (TNI-AL) on 30 October.
Defence Minister Ryamizard Rycacudu and TNI commander Gen Gatot Nurmantyo attended the handover ceremony for this 2,365t ship that will be called KRI
I Gusti Ngurah Rai when commissioned before the end of the year.
Launched in September 2016, the
Martadinata-class frigate was constructed in modular fashion by PT PAL in Surabaya under a technology transfer deal with Damen Schelde Naval Shipbuilding in the Netherlands. Approximately 75 personnel were trained in the Netherlands.
For this second vessel, the majority of hull modules were constructed in Indonesia. For those wondering, SIGMA stands for Ship Integrated Geometrical Modularity Approach.
Indonesia calls this programme Perusak Kawal Rudal (PKR), with the
commissioned on 7 April. The PKR class will consist of only two vessels.
The frigate measures 105.11m long and has a beam of 14.02m. Its top speed is listed as 28kt. It has a range of 5,000nm at 14kt and a 20-day endurance.
The PKR vessels employ a Thales TACTICOS combat management system, SMART-S Mk 2 surveillance radar and STIR 1.2 EO Mk 2 radar/electro-optical tracking system.
Operated by a complement of 122, the frigate’s armament consists of a 76mm gun, CIWS, MBDA VL-MICA surface-to-air missiles, MM40 Exocet Block 3 missiles and 324mm torpedoes.
Indonesia’s policy of Minimum Essential Force (MEF) seeks to create an armed force capable of defending the nation. The navy will thus use the ship to defend sovereign maritime territory and for missions such as search and rescue and humanitarian support.
Damen states that the SIGMA 10514’s ‘primary mission is anti-air, anti-surface and anti-submarine warfare’.
