The Vietnamese were and are a proud civilization that takes pride in the fact that they were never fully conquered by China. Even the strongest Chinese dynasties, ones that nearly (and some say did) achieved superpower status in the Pacific and Indian ocean theaters, were not able to subdue the Vietnamese. The people of Vietnam know that from childhood and they will be never afraid of Chinese military power. They stood up to the US and they would stand gladly up to China against enormous odds simply for their backbone.
your are totally right, but that comes with a price as well. Their homeland is constantly ruined by outside invaders, and their citizens have little enjoyment of peace and simply lacks a stable living enviroment, and the nation itself has little time to develop and recover due to constant fighting the last half of the 20th century. Viet had chances to be do what China did and become much more developed ecnonmically and technologically but instead they chose fight the Chinese on the borders and missed the "golden" time while China captured it.
