your are totally right, but that comes with a price as well. Their homeland is constantly ruined by outside invaders, and their citizens have little enjoyment of peace and simply lacks a stable living enviroment, and the nation itself has little time to develop and recover due to constant fighting the last half of the 20th century. Viet had chances to be do what China did and become much more developed ecnonmically and technologically but instead they chose fight the Chinese on the borders and missed the "golden" time while China captured it.

You are right if you are referring to today. but

In 1962, China was falling out with the Russians, was not a member of the UN, and J Kennedy showed he wasnt a softy when demonstrating to the russians over the cuba crisis

Remember 1969 sino-soviet war at Zhen Bao Tai/island. Despite facing Russia armour and troops, PLA beat them back and capture quite a number of armour(few T-62) and infect serious damage on Soviet side. Not to mention Cultural revolution was still raging on.

Hmm.. I always have the impression that the Soviet gave PLA a thrashing at Zhen Boa Tai ? In fact, some russian's were mentioning that they had to use crawlers to bury the PLA bodies? and that the Grads literally destroyed the whole pla units.

Do you have anything on-line that I can verify ? Thanks

1/ I have a suspicion their was a chinese scientist that worked on the Manhatten Project that went back to China in the late 50's?

2/If You are refering to Kung Yeuh Ting over the artificial insulin, I think he was done a great injustice when the nobel price went to the Americans?

Althought strategy page article is crappy. One of the thread regarding Sino-Russia war with a member called cat-eye gave very detail and accurate description of the conflict. He back his words with article and photo. But the thread is quite old in 2001.

He show a updated photo of PLA troops standing guard of a memorial at Zhen Bao Tai clearly showing it under PLA control. Contradict to what Russian mention that they had capture Zhen Bao Tai from China. Photo of Russia Armour under PLA hand from Zhen Bao Tai.

I try to search back the thread and post the link , if I got time to goggle it. :)

one person does not mean everything. And he did not work with the US to work the hydrogen bomb, and yet China still obtained the hydrogen bomb in 8 months i think?

The reason Ting didnt receive a nobel prize was China at that time period was very much within itself and has very little connections with the western world and therefore he didnt get what he deserved i think.
The spirit I was talking about is no longer alive in China. People could achieve many evolutionary things back then with hardwork and dedication at minimal material support and outside information. Shame that even during the 60s; A very harsh period for China, China was up to the standard with the developed nations in many areas of research before something very infamous happened. now adays with the state of art technology, sufficent funding for many Labs Chinese research is far behind the US and some european nations in many major areas.

You asked me not to say that "the Russians gave the Chinese a blueprint for a nucleur bomb" Actually I was never aware of such a suggestion, but at the time of Chinese first atomic test, I was in America, and some editorials spoke of this Chinese Nucleur Physist that was allowed to go back to China. You know even when China test fired a nucleur rocket I think they said it was a drone, but that was a long time ago and my memory is a little Hazy.

Yes China did slip behind in the late 60's My brother -in laws, brother who was a very keen socialist, went back to China in the 6o's . He came back two yrs later , a very disappointed person, unfortunately I never got around to asking him why. He was actually a very good Friend of "Rewi Alley" a European Nz. who spent alot of time in MAOS China, They even gave him a Chinese name.

I think China was lucky in the 50s when quite a few Very Capable Western Educated Scientists went back to China.

Am I misunderstanding you when you say that despite all the money thats now made avaliable for the Chinese researcher/scientist, they're going backwards when compared to the early days?

Nevertheless China's nuclear weapons project is a stellar example of what Chinese people can achieve against all odds. China detonated her first hydrogen weapon in May '67 with a yield of more than 3 Mt beating France in the race for the ´real one´ by one year. Building a successful thermonuke is not trivial (Ask the Indians... Their dud fizzled even in 1998!) since the ´Teller-Ulam´ configuration creating the fusion reaction is a very intricate process being held under strict secrecy wraps by all powers having mastered that technology so far. China did succeed in overcoming all these overwhelming obstacles already back in the 60's and without doubt any Chinese can be proud about that.

Developing a nuclear weapon and then actually building it is no small task or accomplishment. It should be and is a proud moment in Chinese history, I mean I have seen and heard about the struggles during the 60s and 70s. However we shouldn't make it seem like we did everything, the Soviets as treacherous as they were did pick us up and put us on the correct road and did drive us a good distance down that road.

Well I think most of us are prepared to take each other at face value, so to speak, anyway.

At the end of the day its how we perform at work and the experience we bring with us is what counts. Do the job well and whatever grades one achieved becomes totally insignificant.:)
