My heart tells me that people or there are "great potiential" that are interest in J-31 but they might be lacking in funds since PLA is not sponsoring or supporting them.

Or I am thinking too much

If the behind the scene schedule of j-20 roughly approximated that of some other recent fighters, then I would say the preferred configuration of j-20 may have been determined long before 2006, I wouldn't be surprised if it were already more or less determined even before 2000. Afterwards the race was for the canard delta configuration to lose, and any alternative configuration had very long shots to overcome the preference.

We got the triplane and canard delta CGs of the J-XX at the same time, so chances are it's as the unconfirmed timeline indicated, which was that the design was chosen in 2007-8, but both SAC and CAC's entry were finalized by 2006-7.

Remember these?

Spooky how close they got to the real thing.
Second one especially. You could overlay a plan image of the J-20 over it and the geometry would fit near perfectly.

It was a genuine leak down to the details, and yet no one realized it as it is at the time. It didn't help either with the CGs looking unfinished with the missing cockpit canopy.

Well, nothing spooky about it, somebody had it right, some continued not to accept the truth, but in any respect, right or wrong, it does illustrate .how "cutting edge" the Sino Defense" forum actually is. Lots of fanboy art is entertainning, and "gap filler", whether pictures or aerodynamic speculation, its all good as long as we maintain the standard of truth and honesty.
