Far more likely JDW just had a cockup and somehow thought the name of the maker was the name of the fighter. So someone at JDW might have read something along the lines of 'Sheng Fei project 310 first flew today' and thought that was the name of the fighter. But even so, it should be 'Sheng Fei' surely.
Agreed. But it is Shen Fei, like the city Shen Yang, no 'g' involved.

Just a guess: ShenFei is the simplified name for SAC in Chinese. Either that is what the project was called initially or it's an editing mistake by JDW.

Nah, probably just a mistake by JDW, read the same thing a few weeks ago on another site. For those who aren't clear about this, Shen Fei is short for Shen Yang Fei Ji Gong Si, or Shenyang Aircraft Corporation(SAC). Similarly, Cheng Fei is short for Cheng Du Fei Ji Gong Si, or Chengdu Aircraft Corporation(CAC)

Here's some more Zhuhai pics. No sting and yes, one piece canopy. Since slight diffrences probably not something to rely on real information.

Maybe the sting is an addition to store the brake chutes. These would not be used by a version operating from aircraft carriers.

I agree with the broader thrust of your arguments, but I do think that once we get to the point about how much surface area is facing a radar from the bottom view we should leave that to an actual measurement of surface area. Normally I would simply point out that while the J-20 has canards adding to area facing a land radar from the bottom, the F-22 has tail planes. Nonetheless you're right. All else held equal, it's the actual surface area that matters.

Doesn't it make more sense for the AVIC model @ Zuhai to be an indicative export or multi-role version of the J-31. It makes sense for a J-31'S' to have a a sting and reinforced windshield to better withstand the shock of carrier landings and takeoffs. A air force or multi-role export version doesn't need these... and I'm guessing there's not a huge market for ship borne multi-role stealth fighter outside China that's not alredy committed to the JSF...

Don't know why JDW calls it "Shen Fei" (Falcon Eagle). It should be pronounced as "Hu Yin."

But strictly biologically spoken what's the true name of that "Falcon" or what would be the best fitting translated name of the bird ??

Thanks in advance,
Deino
