It's actually kind of amazing how often Vietnam's top leaders are visiting China and meeting China's leaders
I've always thought of Vietnam as the most pragmatic country in Southeast Asia. They have some of the fiercest territorial disputes with China but they're willing to sign border treaties. They have the most historical animosity with China, but they're also willing to cut trade deals. Vietnam missed out on most of the early BRI opportunities, but I think that they're trying to make up for lost time. One of the big shifts was to go from trying to get Japanese help to build their high speed rail line, they decided to look for Chinese help in 2024.

China and the others have nothing to gain from compromising with India on anything. India needs to recognize it is engaging from a position of weakness and cannot get anything for free. It currently has nothing to offer though and so it cannot get anything in return. Nothing is free in politics.
