Once you realize India is just a shameless clout chaser, its a lot easier to understand them.

I read up back in the 50s/60s China wanted to enter a partnership with India but India rejected it coz China wasn't "cool enough". So in the end China joined Pakistan instead. Zhou Enlai who was said to outsmart Nehru stated he never met a more arrogant person than him. And this was a man who faced his enemies in person who wanted him dead.

To this day India is paying the price because they only chase the current clout and can't see anything long term. One has to wonder how many more mistakes will come to bite it in the ass. If there are enough, the country may not survive it.
A fool never learns!

They will need to build the access roads and railways to it from the rest of South America. But yes this is a huge deal. For cargo from Western Southern America it saves having to ship to Northern America to go into a larger ship before heading to Asia. For cargo from Eastern Southern America it saves having to pass through the Panama Canal.

While you can in theory go around South America the passage is treacherous since those are dangerous waters.

Listen to the entire clip from guancha/Shilao folks talking China's relationship with ASEAN countries.

They basically just focused on China-Vietnam, since that's the one that seems to be mending right now. Basically, they said it was really hard to negotiation back 20-30 years ago, because people involved in the war were still around.

Then when they got to the 2010s, Vietnam needed to build HSR and picked Japanese. But Japan couldn't deliver, so it's just China now.

And they also mentioned that China has great relations with Laos, Cambodia and Thailand. Vietnam is on an island if it doesn't try to get along with China.

And I think it's also worth mentioning that Chinese coast guard and military have built up so much that Vietnam has no illusions that it can challenge China's naval control in SCS.

So, there is a whole confluence of factors that have led to renewed engagement in military between the two countries. And we will see if China can sell any weapons to Vietnam. There would be a huge uproar from Vietnamese nationalist if they buy anything major.

The era of Hedging had ended and it's thanks to Uncle Sam, you had to choose your poison and the Chinese one is palpable cause you can still live unlike the US which can literally kill you. So in ASEAN, only 2 countries sided with the US, Singapore and the Philippines, both may have the best real estate in the region BUT with the age of hypersonic missile they're a liability for the US. Whoever plan the current US strategy of multiple bases to counter China is an oxymoron, spreading your already limited asset to counter Chinese escalatory dominance will only invited military disaster.
