Re: Type 08. Am I right in assuming that the bolts on the outside of the MGS variant, which do not appear on the SPG variant, are attachment points for ERA?

Yes, they are screws/bolts used to fix the appliqué armor plates/modules to the attachment points on the vehicle body.
Here's an image of an (upgraded) 8x8 IFV without the plates. You can see the attachment points (each containing a screw hole):

Interesting, counting the previously announced mortar training (along with the HJ-12),
