Nuclear icebreaker "Ural" project 22220 went on sea trials
October 14, 2022

On October 14, the second serial nuclear icebreaker of project 22220 "Ural" left the outfitting embankment of the Baltic Shipyard (part of the USC) and headed for the Gulf of Finland, where it will begin the program of factory sea trials.

For the next three weeks, the commissioning team of the Baltic Shipyard, together with representatives of counterparty organizations, will check the operation of the mechanisms and equipment of the icebreaker.

The specialists planned to conduct a set of tests, including the operation of the steam turbine plant, the ship's electric propulsion systems, the operation of the shaft lines and deck mechanisms (anchor and steering gear).

The speed and maneuverability characteristics of the icebreaker, the functioning of general ship systems and automation systems will be tested. In addition, an important stage of sea trials will be the verification of navigation and communication systems, as well as the operation of the helicopter complex.

The universal nuclear icebreaker Ural is the third vessel of project 22220 being built at the Baltic Shipyard. The laying ceremony took place on July 25, 2016. In November 2018, 2 RITM-200 nuclear reactors were installed. The launch took place on May 25, 2019. The ship will be handed over to the customer before the end of this year.

Penicillin reconnaissance systems effectively deal with NATO artillery in Ukraine

MOSCOW, October 15 - RIA Novosti. The latest Russian artillery reconnaissance systems "Penicillin" have confirmed their effectiveness in battles in Ukraine, including in the fight against NATO artillery supplied to Ukrainian troops, an informed source told RIA Novosti.

"Several 1B76 Penicillin artillery reconnaissance systems have been tested in combat conditions in Ukraine. The complexes have demonstrated high efficiency in the framework of counter-battery combat against the artillery of the Ukrainian troops, including those used by Ukrainian military artillery systems of NATO countries," the agency's interlocutor said.

"Penicillin" is intended for reconnaissance of firing positions of cannon and rocket artillery, as well as anti-aircraft and tactical missiles. The complex captures acoustic and thermal waves from shots and explosions and provides the operator with the exact coordinates of the location of the enemy gun for manual and automatic drawing on an electronic map. At the same time, the time for obtaining the coordinates of a single target firing is no more than five seconds.

The difference between "Penicillin" and the American AN / TPQ-36 counter-battery radar used by the Ukrainian troops is that it does not use radio waves, so it cannot be detected by radio equipment and suppressed by electronic warfare systems.

"Penicillin" was developed by the enterprise of the Scientific Research Institute "Vector", which is part of "Ruselectronics". The complex works effectively at any time of the day at temperatures ranging from minus 40 to plus 50 degrees Celsius. The system is installed on the Kamaz chassis, its reconnaissance optoelectronic module is mounted on a lifting mast.

Is this the first counter battery radar of its kind? Seems to be quite innovative.

No. during Korean War. US used similar system for counter-battery. Tho it seems it's Russia that continue interest on this passive system.

The benefit is obviously because it's passive it cannot be located by ESM's.

Video training crews of Russian reconnaissance vehicles BRM-1KM. The armored vehicle is equipped with a remotely controlled weapon module with a 30 mm 2A72 automatic cannon, a similar module is used on the BTR-82.

A small episode of training Russian recruits of PMC "Wagner" to fight tanks and overcome fear of them. When a tank passes over a soldier, a few centimeters remain between it and the bottom of the vehicle. This is primarily a psychological exercise that allows you to get rid of the fear of heavy equipment.
