Russian Helicopters, AgustaWestland kick off 2.5t-class joint venture

Russian Helicopters and AgustaWestland have formally kicked off their joint bid to produce an all-new 2.5t-class single-engined rotorcraft, with the signing of a heads of agreement at the MAKS air show in Moscow.

Details of design, workshare and project management for the 50:50 project, along with a market assessment, will be laid out by year-end. The helicopter is being designed for the world market and wide range of applications.

According to Russian Helicopters chief executive Dmitry Petrov, European certification is targeted for the final quarter of 2016. A joint group focused on the project has been at work since June 2012, and has produced a mock-up, he added in a briefing at his Moscow office last month.

The partners already have a 50:50 joint venture, HeliVert, which assembles AW139s for the Russian and CIS markets, at a 40,000m² (430,000ft²) site at Tomilino, near Moscow. The pair are yet to reveal where they will build the proposed 2.5t type.

Russian Helicopters is separately gearing up to begin production in Brazil - possibly of its new Kamov Ka-62, a 6.5t-class medium multirole helicopter.

Atlas Táxi Aéreo of Brazil is the launch customer for that aircraft, which is being readied for first flight in October or November.

Ansat light twin helicopter gains Russian civil certification
Print
By: DOMINIC PERRY LONDON 09:30 2 Sep 2013 Source:

Russian Helicopters has finally achieved civil certification of the Kazan Ansat light twin, albeit with hydromechanical controls rather than the fly-by-wire system initially proposed.

Kazan started work on the current iteration of the Ansat in 2011 after encountering difficulty in the certification process for the fly-by-wire controls. The first prototypes of the helicopter made their appearance in the late 1990s.

"No commercial fly-by-wire helicopter had obtained certification anywhere in the world, and there were no established requirements for such a helicopter," says Russian Helicopters.

To speed up the civil approval process, it dropped the more advanced technology in favour of a traditional control system.

Russia's defence military will eventually take delivery of the fly-by-wire-equipped Ansat-U trainer for its flight-training schools. Additional examples will be handed over to the Russian air force in November.

The civil Ansat is powered by a pair of Pratt & Whitney Canada PW207K turboshafts and boasts a maximum take-off weight of 3,600kg.

In addition, Russian Helicopters has received approval for the VIP transport variant of its Mil Mi-171 medium twin.

In addition, it is probable that the Russians have at least one, if not two nuclear attack subs in the area. I am listing two here, an Akula and a Seirra. Both are very formidable and dangerous submarines.

The UK, the Italians and the French have been conducting extensive ASW exercises in the area, so you have to believe that they expect this. I would imagine that the five US Burke class destroyers and the French Horizon class DDG that is accompanying them are also conducting significant ASW exercises around themselves, and expect the US, the French and the UK also have SSNs in the area.

These six surface ships, and potentially two SSNs are a very significant force for the Russians. Short of having their carrier there and one of the nuclear battle cruisers, this is the most powerful naval force the Russians could put together.

Hopefully no hostilities will break out between them and the US and French forces in the area...but if it did, it would be one hellacious battle, and a lot of good people would die and be injured.

With the French carrier group, the also very strong US/French SAG, all of the UK and Italian vessels in the area, US aircraft from Italy and the two US nuclear aircraft carriers near the Red Sea, I expect the Russians would be defeated. But I also expect that they would exact a high price too. I pray that none of that happen.

The 17th, eh? I thought she was supposed to get there sooner.

By the 17th, the fireworks may be over if the US Congress gives Obama a green light by the 11th or 12th. Once he gets the green light, I expect he will act quickly.

It's almost a certainty that the Senat will, but not so certain in the House of representatives. We shall see.

And so the Russians continue to move on heavy apc and ifvs. Playing catch up with the Israelis, who are masters of turning tanks into ifvs. Still not bad wonder how many troops it will carry.
